So next summer I am *technically* elgible to work, do you think I should work for a few summers, save up, and build a rig despite my parent's objections? I really need a rig for I need the power (video editing will come in handy) and I think that having a rig is just awesome in general? Should I start planning now?

If your parents won't allow it in the end then it would just be a waste of time and effort, if they're just against it go right ahead!

You should work summers whether its for a pc or not, that experience goes well on a resume when you want a real job at 18

It's your life, you should be the one in charge of it. Even though 13 year-olds aren't usually mature enough for that, you are really mature for your age.

I'd say if you get a change to get a summer job, go grab it. Brings you some money and work experience which comes in real handy when you become an adult, because then you pretty much need past work experience to get any job whatsoever.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

You worked for it so it's your money then right? :) So they can't really stop you. At least you don't spend it on drugs or some other bad things. Then I would understand why your parents are concerned.

Bye LTT. That was an interesting journey on this board. At least here you see how not to do it. I'll go shaking my head about this place.

I'm going to apply with SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) next summer and hope to get a job, they pick it by lottery.

I wouldn't spend it on drugs, I'm not that type of person. I should start planning a rig in the coming months.

Go for it! Money is always useful. Plus I assume you'll want a car soon unless you live in a really nice transit area.

I don't imagine it will take summers for you to get the rig, I can only see it taking one.

Kinda odd that some users' parents here won't allow their kids to get a summer job (or even any kind of job)... I have no idea why that is, isn't that only a good thing to have a job (unless you're a full-time student, then it can get exhausting).

I have a bit different parent: my mother encourages me to get a job, but instead of preventing me to get a job, she forcefully takes part of the income whenever she needs it (or feels like it) to pay the bills etc. (like for example 3 days ago I had to pay our internet bill or else we'd loose it), but she's too lazy to get a job herself. She says there isn't any jobs in this municipality, honestly I think she hasn't even gave a glance at available jobs within 20 kilometers (2 nearest municipalities are within that distance). Hech one time she was even offered a job in some company, but she refused it (to note at that time she had already been about 1,5 years unemployed). No wonder why my family is so poor: father is dead and mother won't accept any jobs she's given...

The NYC subway is a ten-minute walk from my house and the bus is 2 blocks away, but I would really like a car.

The only problem I see is ordering parts for the rig- I could take the bus to the Micro Center and request that the parts be shipped to my home, is that possible?

Never thought you are that kind of. I mean you spend it on something usefull what has value (more or less) not throw the cash out of the window for junk like other teenagers. Honestly I don't know what's "cool" now, I'm 25 so probably old :/ Right next to this what others said already, you learn alot for future jobs.

Your parents should come to sense that they don't need to take all decisions for you anymore. You probably move out in a few years, get a nice girl, get a job, enjoy whatever you want. So parents step back a little.

but...but...but I am Asian and a New Yorker! :D

As for the issue, I don't believe Micro Center do shipping. Only pickup.

And hey, I live like 20 minutes from the Micro Center in Brooklyn :D

I'd take the B-35 there, it runs about 4 blocks away. It terminates at 1st Avenue near the Sunset Park Costco.

I think you should but you really can't plan out something related to tech more than 2 months or so in advance since in two weeks that one new part is going to come out or by the time you have money the parts you are going to buy aren't really the best bang for the buck or the most bleeding edge anymore.

I would say yes, got a job for the first time a few months ago (in May I think) work can certainly be some damn work, but the money is  nice, and I get bored sitting at a chair all the time.

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..
