Hey, so i recently got a free FX-6300 and a free FX-8350/20 from my friend, and i was planning on pairing it with a  AMD R9 280X and is wondering if there is gonna be any bottle necking. Also whats a good motherboard to handle the overlocking of the cpu and the raw power of the gpu?

So... Are you using the 6300 or the 8350?

both the 6300 and the 8350/20 wont bottleneck that 280X, witch i wouldn't call Raw powerful  :P  and i suggest a Gigabyte 990-FXA UD3 or a Sabertooth 990FX

Well since i won't be doing much multitasking, its gonna be the 6300 for now, unless you guys think the 8320 will be better?

The 8320 for sure.

It really won't bottleneck, but I would use only the 8350 and use the 6300 in another PC. 6 core AMD CPUs are not doing well these days compared to what you could get on the Intel side of things.

Spoiler

i5 4670k, GTX 970, 12GB 1600, 120GB SSD, 240GB SDD, 1TB HDD, CM Storm Quickfire TK, G502, VG248QE, ATH M40x, Fractal R4

Spoiler

i5 4278U, Intel Iris Graphics, 8GB 1600, 128GB SSD, 2560x1600 IPS display, Mid-2014 Model

Spoiler

All the parts are here, just need to get customized cords to connect the motherboard to the front panel.

when you get the FX8350/20

use this mobo

with a nice cooler you can OC it to 9590 speeds

There won't be much of a bottleneck, if any, with either the FX-6300 or FX-8320/50.

I'm using a FX-8350 with a Radeon HD 7970 (aka R9-280X), and I'm not complaining.

How far you can overclock the FX-6300 or FX-8320/50 will depend on how...lucky your friend (or you) is with the silicon chip lottery.

You can look at the CPU overclocking database that is found on the forums here...it varies.

If I remember...a few people needed 1.5V just to get 4.4GHz or 4.6GHz stable on a FX-8350. Me? I need 1.4V for 4.8GHz...and I'm using a "regular" big-chunk-of-metal CPU cooler.

A few decent motherboards for overclocking:

  1. 970 Chipset
    1. Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
    2. (coming soon) MSi 970 GAMING http://www.msi.com/product/mb/970_GAMING.html#hero-overview
    3. ASUS M5A97 EVO / PRO
  2. 990X Chipset (not many around left)
    1. ASUS M5A99X EVO
    2. Gigabyte GA-990X-UD3
    3. MSi 990XA-GD55
  3. 990FX Chipset
    1. ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z
    2. ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
    3. ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
    4. Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0

i think its because not many game have been code to use beyond 4 cores or even 6 cores

so that could be the reason why the fps scores for the fx 6 cores may be close to the fx 8 cores

Can the 6300 overclock as much as the 8350?

you can get higher clocks on the 6 core

but clock for clock the 8 core will still be faster

Maybe, but why don't you just use the 8320 or 8350? Why use a 6 core when you can use an 8 core?

You can get a better OC on the 6300, as with 2 less cores it means less thermal output, and slightly better overclocking potential. You would only net a slightly better performance gain with the 8core if you for instance play BF4 with those 64 player servers (i think that' the max amount of players on a server you can get).
