Hello :)

I'm new here at the Linustechtips forum. However I've of course been following Linus for some time on Youtube and I thought to myself, if anyone could help me by answering this question it would be you guys in here.

Basically I'm looking to get a new PC.. I'm currently running on a 5-year-old AMD build with the following specs

AMD Phenom X4 95 Black 3.2GHz

Corsair 4GB DR3 Kit 13 Mhz

Corsair TX Series 650Watt

Gigabyte GA-MA70T-UD3P

XFX Radeon HD6870

Overall I've been very happy and satisfied with this build but I think it's time for something new.

As I started researching on the latest parts I have become a bit confused. I'm not sure wheter I should go ahead and get myself a Haswell Refresh build or if it's worth the wait for Broadwell / Skylake.. There's talk about PCI-e 4.0, DDR4 etc.. But is it even realistic to take that into consideration now? I'm guessing that DDR4 will be extremly expensive anyways once it hits the market and DDR3 doesn't even seem to be exhausted anyway yet..

Anyway I'm kinda unsure so what's your take on this?

Thanks

Lol what? Where did you read that? As far as i know it's lowest frequency is 2400 and 99% of ddr3 ram is below that.

And one more thing... Speed of ram doesnt really matter unless you're buying an APU.

No. Ram speed doesn't matter for GAMING unless your buying an APU. There are quite a few uses for faster memory outside of gaming.

I should be studying.

I don't know, can you wait another year?

Heh.. Well I guess that I could.. But deep down inside I'm not sure that I want to :D.. I've kinda wanted a new system for quite a while now since I find my current somewhat insufficient when it comes to playing all of the newest games on the settings I want :P

With X97 and refreshed Haswell, there isn't an incentive to wait. Go ahead and pick out your parts now.

I guess it settles it then.. I think I'll start taking a look at it in a couple of minutes.. For the sake of it I'm probably going to create a new topic just to keep it seperated

Thanks :)

Don't wait. You will always be waiting for the next thing to come out. Technology moves quickly. Buying now will not make your build irrelivent when DDR4 comes out.

Very sensible.

Unless you are buying a 5820k minimum with DDR4 and an over priced, possibly unstable new tech then I would avoid waiting.

Haswell E is going to be ridiculously expensive, with the charted DDR4 running 15-15-15-50 @ 2133mhz. Not 2400mhz. It will be a long, long time before the timings and speeds match that of DDR3. Any new ram at launch is very temperamental and fussy about boards.

If you're not in the Haswell E market then just get a Devil's Canyon, pref I7.

ddr4-release-date.jpg

It translates to about £230 without VAT. So around $300 for 16gb unbranded 2133 crap timings.

Never, ever jump aboard a new DDR. At launch they are no better than the sticks already out there.

Area 51 2014. Intel 5820k@ 4.4ghz. MSI X99.16gb Quad channel ram. AMD Fury X.Asus RAIDR.OCZ ARC 480gb SSD. Velociraptor 600gb. 2tb WD.

I have commented on this picture before, the conversion to US$ is a bit inaccurate. PC parts cost more here than in the US. So you can't necessarily take that price literally.

I didn't, I factored in VAT, tax and all the other things we get raped for here in the UK and USA.
