Laptop - Looking for advices / suggestions (Gaming & Work )

SenaVII
Hi !

So I've been looking for a laptop similar to the Razer Blade since they don't ship it to Europe (Only to NA ;_; ) and I found those :

  1. Msi G60 2PE-046FR Ghost Pro (http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00166389.html)
  2. XMG C504 (http://www.xmg.gg/c504) + http://i.imgur.com/HptKTRE.png

As you may have noticed , I'm looking for a thin & light laptop ( since I'll have to carry it to college / work ) with a ~1500 euros (~2000$ ) budget that I'll mainly use for work & play games.

I hope you can help me finding out which one is the best , or suggest any other laptop that you think would suit me better !

Thanks , and sorry if I made mistakes , I did my best but english isn't my native language ^^'

Apple or Lenovo, wouldn't touch any of these with a ten foot pole.

Are you sure about Apple ? The Intel HD Graphic 5000 or the Intel Iris Graphic (depending on the model ) doesn't look that great :x

Apple makes great laptops and the macbook pro is very powerfull for light/medium content creation. But the question is do you plan to game on this laptop?

CPU: i5-3570K GPU: Sapphire R9 280X Vapor OC MOBO: Asus P8Z77-M RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 16GB. PSU: Corsair CX600M CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 7 rev 2

SSD: 1x Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB, 1x Crucial M4 128GB HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB

MSI is probably a good choice.

I would suggest buying a hybrid laptop for carrying around and a dedicated gaming desktop for your dorm as you'll never get a gaming equivalent performance out of an ultrabook due to less space for heat dissipation. The only mobile graphics processor that is up to snuff at the moment is the 880M which delivers close to desktop graphics performance. But all the notebooks which use it at the moment all weight over 5kgs.

If you can wait about 6 months Asus has said that they're creating a competitor to the Razer Blade (Rumoured though) and they have more of a worldwide presence so you should be able to buy it from your country.

I see , the 880M thing is actually quite interesting , but a 5kg laptop isn't what I'm looking for, even if that means I won't have the best gaming performances , and I can't afford having both a laptop + gaming desktop :P

The Asus rumor might interest me too !

And if you don't mind , can you tell me what make you think the MSI is better than the XMG ?

Thanks !

The XMG laptop looks like it's the same model of the Gigabyte P35W. In the configurations you listed, the XMG has a slightly better CPU but it's so slight it isn't a huge difference.. Other than that, the hardware is pretty similar, except for the fact that I don't think you can customize the color of the backlit keyboard on the XMG/Gigabyte. Upgrade-wise, they both have 2 mSATA slots but the XMG should have a second hard drive slot(swapable with an optical drive) while the MSI only has the one with no capability for an internal optical drive.

I like Notebookcheck reviews for checking laptops, but the exact configurations you're looking at don't seem to be there. Here's a review of the 14" version of the Gigabyte P35W along with the MSI Ghost Pro (but with a 3K screen instead of 1080p, unfortunately)

http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GS60-Ghost-Pro-3K-Edition-2PEWi716SR21-Notebook-Review.118569.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigabyte-P34G-v2-Notebook-Review.120354.0.html

The cooling on the XMG laptop might be a little better than the MSI. The 14" version would probably run hotter than the 15" version, I would expect something slightly better than the temperatures listed in the Gigabyte review. The MSI Ghost Pro 3K should be very similar to the model you're looking at, and the surface temperatures of 78 C on the bottom / 50 C on top seem awfully hot.

Anyway, if I'm reading it right, the XMG is like 400 euros cheaper? If that's the case, because the hardware is so similar, I think I'd prefer to get the XMG.

I suggest you wait a bit longer. Interesting pieces of hardware are coming out in the near future. E.g. Aorus 3x and asus gx500.

It's just more of a personal preference. When buying gaming laptops I look more towards how it handles heat from the GPU rather than the GPU itself. It's useless to have a 780M in your notebook if its downclocked to avoid overheating the motherboard.

In my opinion Asus has been releasing laptops that have fantastic heat distribution systems for many years now and MSI doesn't come close to their expertise but is still a better option than Dell, HP or even Alienware in some cases.

I have no experience with XMG. It could create better laptops than Asus for all I know but I have to base my opinions on products I have actually used in the past. In which case I would go for MSI.

I dont think these are great choices if you want to carry it everywhere.

Id suggest a MacBook Pro with a eGPU solution. With that config you can work on the go and game if you are at home.

My PC: Intel Core i3-3220 | Alpenföhn Civetta | XFX HD 7770 1GB | ASRock B75-Pro3-M | Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB | beQuiet PurePower L8 430W | Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB | Kingston V200+ 60GB | NZXT Vulcan | Soundblaster Play Replaced by Notebook + eGPU

My Notebook:   Apple MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch, Late 2013; Core i5 4258U @2.4-2.9 Ghz, 8GB RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, Iris Graphics 5100 + GTX 960 eGPU

My Phone: OnePlus One with CM12      Camera: Nikon D3200 + 50mm f/1.8G + Kit lenses
