Hi,i have an ipod touch 5th gen and am not sure if i should jailbreak it. The reason why i would want to jailbreak it, is to customize my ipod and to emulate systems like a snes or gba. Right now i have emulators on an old psp and it's a bit too big to keep in my pocket and feels a bit weird to play on it in public.  I would like to know the disadvantages of jailbreaking and if i have anything to lose. I've never jailbroken any iOS device so this is all new to me but it looks fairly easy to do. Also my warranty is still on for another few months.

You could potentially brick your ipod. But the risk isnt that high if you know what you are doing.

But i would wait for the warranty to end first...

Cons: Usually runs slower, takes up space, small chance you can brick your ipod(but you can always restore)

Pros: Customizable, free apps, undetectable (if you mess it up, just restore and Apple can't tell that you jailbroke), and other stuff

Me: Yeah I just really can't get my H220 working again, I've tried everything that was suggested in the forum.

Brian (Swiftech Support): Hmm, have you tried slapping it?

So if it does brick, i could just restore it via itunes and it will be back to normal?

Yeah, you just need to put it in recovery mode and restore it, but you'll lose everything on it. I've heard of ipod's that have completely bricked and couldn't even go into recover mode though, so I guess there's a chance of that happening as well, but it's never happened to me.

The bricking your device is normally done when someone makes a mistake in chosing an option during jailbreaking or have a device that is not jailbreakable and chose a device there are literally thousands of tutorials online of how to do this correctly and most problems are not hard to fix, usually just restore the device, ipods are fairly simple to jailbreak, main things to know is your firmware which is ios something now if you have 6.1.3 or 6.1.4 you can not jailbreak as of currently,  other major thing to note is your modem firmware.

If you're on ios 6.0-6.1.2, you can jailbreak and apparently there is (no?) chance of bricking it. However, on previous versions (which you can't have) it's possible to brick it, and on newer versions, there's no jailbreak available yet. I jailbroke my iPod 4 and haven't looked back (except perhaps to wonder whether to go to 6.1.2 before they released a new update which fixed it, but I was too slow). You might want to wait until apple discontinue support for it though.

I don't think the bricking risk is that high, as long as u are careful and think before you do something. The reason why I say this is because I bricked my second gen by trying to reset it on the IPod. It refused to boot past the apple logo and I thought I'd killed it. In hindsight I can't see how this would actually work, scene as jail breaking edits system files... I just put it in a draw and tried to forget about it for about a year, until I read some more and realised to just plug it tino my pc and click restore. To my amaisment it worked and now my sister uses it. I cannot talk for all bricking scenarios though, obviously.

I've jailbroken many devices. Don't worry about bricking your device. Not saying it won't happen but the chance is so slim that you don't need to stress about it. Depending on what version firmware your device has jailbreaking is simple. If you recently bought it then your firmware will be too new. Only ios 6.1.2 and older can be jailbroken at this time.

This should answer a lot of your questions.

Also your device will only run slower if you are throwing a bunch of themes at it to customize the look. Just keep things simple and only do a few things at a time and your device will be reliable and the way you want it.
