New build New OS?

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

I've purchased a windows 8.1 license key and have downloaded the ISO for my new build, it doesn't have an optical drive so I will have to put it on a USB drive and install it from there.

I've used ISO's in the past but unsure on how to use it this time to install a fresh clean install of windows 8.1 on a brand new build.

Could you advise on how to do this or point me in the right direction?

Well, you are using two things I haven't used. USB and Win8.1. Always done this with VC/DVD, windows and linux both. Basicly you need to put ISO to USB drive using Microsofts own tool for it. Not just copy. "Burn" ISO to it. Here's guide with dl link http://fasttechbuzz.com/how-to-create-windows-8-187-bootable-dvd-or-pendrive-burn-iso-files/

From that point on. You need to set USB flash drive to first boot device from mobo. I believe it prompts Press any key to boot from ... when you have it plugged in. After that its pretty straight forward. You select language settings, select whether to install new or repair old. Select drive and format it if nessessary. You can also partition drives this way thought there are better software for it. Here's guide with pics http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2425927,00.asp

I hope this helps.

Okay so the PC I am using at the moment is a prebuilt system (Predator G5900) that I purchased a few years ago.

It came installed with Windows 7 64 bit but never came with a windows CD.

As I am making a new build for the first time I am unsure of a few things.

1. Am I able to transfer my OS product key from one system to another? ( I will be dismantling this system and selling it in parts but not including the motherboard and HDD they are useless.

2. Can I create a windows install CD on my current system now so that I can install windows 7 on my new build without having to purchase a CD version.

3.Similar to number two, can I create an ISO image now to use in my new build?

4. This mainly relates to question 1. If I can't re-use my product key for windows 7 and I am forced to purchase another copy , would you recommend I stick with windows 7 or go with 8.1?

Note: Computer is mainly used for general internet browsing, word documents and gaming (Steam & Origin).

Many Thanks.

Just use the product key that you have and it will be valid. All you need to have is a windows iso, you can also download a windows boot manager so you can install windows through a usb drive if you don't want to buy a disc drive.

1. Yes, you can use the Windows 7 key again.

2. Yes, if you can find a good .ISO you can, you can also mount it to a FAT-32 formated USB Flash Drive.

3. I don't know if you can create an ISO of your current Windows 7, i don't think it's possible.

4. You can re-use it so don't worry.

Thank you both so much for your response :) So happy I can use it again and don't have to spend more money on a new one :D

I have a external portable usb powered dvd writer that I will be using to install the OS on which means I don't have to worry about using a flash drive.

So where do I go from here? Do I have to find an ISO image to burn on to a disk? Or is there a tool I can use in windows that will create a copy of windows for me?

Also do I have to do any sort of deactivating on this PC before installing it on my new build?

I just found out that my license key is an OEM version and upon reading some more I found out that these are non transferable and can only be used on the original pc.  Does this make a difference or do your posts still stand correct?

Since its prebuilt, answer would be no, you can't reuse win7 key. If you would have bought separed OEM that would be reusable. If you want new win7 key, use some cheap etailer like G2A etc. You can get ISO's pretty easily still though offical service has been closed.
