Someone said this on reddit. Is this true? I wasn't into pcs back then so i wouldn't know.

Could be true as early intel MacBook Pro GPUs were also susceptible to the same issue in which the solder contact points below the GPU would desolder themselves with the lower heat tolerance of lead-free solder.

Well i dont know the reason but the soldering points kinda failed so you bake the card and "refresh" the soldering.

Well i dont know the reason but the soldering points kinda failed so you bake the card and "refresh" the soldering.

Not at all... that can happen with all BGA technically bc they now (well, since before 2005) use SAC solder and it's harder than leaded tin, it easily cracks and the solution is rework

yeah, I remember this being the hype back then.

 

Though I never experienced it since I had a 7000 series card.

Not sure if only 8series cards but you heard a lot of those and not any others. Your explanation with solder types and stuff sound good tho ;)

Lead+Tin= Noice solder, it's soft and does it's work but we all know the problems of Lead

SAC= SnAgCu= Tin, Silver and Copper = Does it's work, no lead, better conductivity, but it's a hard material, cracks at temperature change (this is the problem). Rework is the method of melting the solder again (usually repairmen replace the whole BGA)

Or, baking it, is what your getting at, right?
