Which R9 290 should I get? I was thinking of the Sapphire Vapor X Or Sapphire Tri-X.

I was originally set on a 4gb 770, but I hear the 290 is better.

if you can afford the Vapor X

or the Tri-X is also good enough

among the best coolers around the Vapor X or the MSI Tri Frozr from the Lightning series

but since we are only talking about 290

go for the Vapor X because it use a custom PCB and the Vapor chambers cooling solution is one of the coolest

TriX. Not only because I have it, but it is good value and performs well. The Vapor-X is better I think, as well as the lightning, but they are more expensive, and you don't really need that. I you want to spend the money though? I would go for the lightning. Looks awesome!

The Tri-X is already very cool and quiet too. The Vapor-X is better of course. Aside from the Vapor-X's slightly lower temps, you're mostly paying for the bling which includes a cool looking lightning blue-accented backplate and LED lighting.

I would buy an R9 290 with a preferably shorter cooler. If it fits better in smaller form factor cases it'll be of more use vs a triple fan cooler which is +12"inches.

True. Sorry, I forgot.

Then I suppose either of the Sapphire ones should be the weapon of choice. They are huge, but the 290 gets too hot otherwise.

Actually works really well. But I get what you mean. It would probably help airflow, if the card wasn't as big. But it always stays under 80°C, so that's fine I guess.
And there are many smaller SFF cases as well, so yeah. As I said, I know what you mean. ;-)

Right now the Vapor-X is about $50 more expensive than a Tri-X. Since the Vapor-X has a binned core you can expects some crazy stuff like 1250 Mhz on the core or something. I'd say go for the Vapor-X.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/66491-sapphire-r9-290-vapor-x-oc-review.html He got it to approximately 1280 Mhz on the core.

Did you OC?

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

Did you OC?

Actually not. That would probably work, since my cooler only ramps up to about 40%, but then it will get loud I guess.

I thought Asus was good?

I'm just looking for a 290 that has good cooling around $400 because these cards get really hot.

the cooler they use on the GPU is made more for the Geforce

AMD versions are bad as the cooler have no contact with the VRMs and VRAM

it lead to bad artifact from VRAM overheating

I have tested all of them, you can see on my channel all the different ones going head to head so that should help give you some informed advice.

The top two are the Powercolor PCS+ and the Sapphire Vapor-X.

Behind those two in a solid third place is the Tri-X, everything else is further down on the list, especially the Asus, its useless.

If for whatever reason you cannot get any of those 3 and you dont want to OC, then I would go with the Gigabyte Windforce.

MSI R9 290 Gaming is a good choice too, also cheaper from my experience.

I can certainly vouch for this card.

The HIS fan profile is very aggressive so it can get loud not because the cooler is bad or anything of the sort. The cooler is great the fan profile is just way too aggressive so just make sure to use MSI afterburner and set a custom fan curve it's super easy to set up.

The Gigabyte card is also GREAT if you don't care about overclocking then this card is just perfect. VERY quiet at stock 1040mhz. The Sapphire Tri-X is obviously much better but if you keep both cards running at stock you will not notice any difference, it's when you start really pushing the overclocks and voltages do you really see the Tri-X shine.

The Tri-X can sustain a much higher voltage than the Windforce before it starts getting loud.

CPU : i5 3570K @ 4.5Ghz. GPU : MSI Lightning GTX 770 @ 1300mhz. 16GB 1600mhz RAM
