What program to wipe an HDD

Go to solution Solved by ohJey,

My dad and I have a project of trying to sell an old, old desktop pc lying around. One problem, we need to wipe the two hard drives it has and then install a fresh os. So the question is, what is the best hard drive wiping software that we can use to securely erase the disks? My dad already tried the CNET Eraser tool, but that seemed to get caught on a lot of non-authorized programs and overall the program seems too complex. Thanks for the help.

CCleaner has a drive wiper, use as many passes as you can bear to sit through

Command prompt. Format c: . I think there is a parameter to do a full wipe, not a quick one.

But will that overwrite the disk with blank data to stop people from getting the files back?

Oh, didn't read that. I would use Eraser or DBAN.

Dad decided to not go with internet help so he's trying Minitool Drive Wipe. If that doesn't work gonna try ccleaner, and if not that, DBAN. Thanks guys.

I personally would destroy the drive phiscally for data protection because you cant trust format. I ALWAYS take out my drive and put in a new one with a fresh operating system.I don't any chance that my data would be out there. There is no secure way to delete 100% of your data. Who knows what could be on that drive (Credit card numbers social security numbers, bank account logins), Best just to play it safe and pull the drive. Charge the extra 80 bucks and put in a new hdd. Or just sell it without the hdd and tell the buyer that they need to buy one on their own.
