is 550W enough?

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

i also thought so  then i saw this    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7601/sapphire-radeon-r9-290-review-our-first-custom-cooled-290/5

if whole system takes 500 w   can i be able to add new hdd and pciex1 sound card with 550W psu??

The testing was done with an oc'ed 4960x, not an e3-1246 v3. The system doesn't draw 500w. Like I've already said, the system would draw under ~400w at load. You have plenty of headroom for add-on cards.

my rig is

Intel Xeon E3-1246 V3 3.4GHz
Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" SSD
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X

might add 1 hdd and sound card and usb dac.

gonna overclock 290 tri-x to max

3-4 fans

is 550W enough???

the extreme power calculator gave 538W psu

any opinions??  how is this one??Seasonic S12G-550 550 Watts PSU

The 550 G is excellent and is plenty for the system.

550W is reeeeaaaaaalllllly stretching it.

Get a nice 650-700W. Like the Cooler Master/Corsair variants.

No it isn't. The system would pull under ~400w at load: http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/powercolor-radeon-r9-290x-pcs-review,9.html

You can find out on http://www.coolermaster.outervision.com/

By my calculation, your Processor are so extreme that you at least need 600-650W Bronze 80+

No matter what to do, I needed to reach that goal                            -Arnold Schwarzenegger 1975

BS, don't comment if you have no idea what you're talking about.

I once had a 500W PSU fail after adding a hard drive, I'm not fucking with you.

Not all 500w psus are created equal.

I'd say 650w too, u can probably get a 650w (good one) for pretty much the same price as a 550, not much more anyway, I see no harm in spending a little more to get 100 watts more PSU

I'm not going to say 550 isn't enough, but I will say, I had a 530w be quiet l8 on this system before the evga and it would black screen during gaming once I upgraded to 280x, or reset the comp after gaming, since adding new PSU none of that has been happening. . . I know our rigs aren't the same, but that's just my experience. I'm only saying go 650 for peace of mind for anything else you might want to add in future
