Pretty much set on my budget and choice of parts but im still looking for thoughts or maybe just confirmation. I never used MSI before but i am making a leap of faith even though ive read some complaints about their quality control.

MOBO: MSI H97 Gaming 3

RAM: G.Skill ripjaws 1600/cl9 (mobo listed on the QVL)

CPU: i5 4690 with Inter-Tech MARS T1

GPU: MSI r9 280x

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB

PSU: Cooler Master g550m

CASE: BitFenix Neos

Considering buying 2x corsair sp120 for the intake (there is a dust filter) and an af120 for the exhaust. Is that overkill? The mobo does have 3x 4pin connectors.

Any thoughts? Cant decide between the Samsung 840 evo 250gb or a crucial mx500 256gb which is 20€ cheaper. I am also considering spending 20€ more on a g750m psu just for the option to crossfire if i decide to.

Thanks for the read

If you mean the M500 SSD, don't get it. Very slow. The Samsung will be a much better drive.

The 280x is a much better card if you can afford it.

I was thinking about it however it would cost nearly 100€ more. I am already pushing the budget and most i see overclocking isnt really worth it (max 5-10% in some games). I may rather get a better gpu. Im open to suggestions though so discuss away.

280x is faster but also costs 53€ more. This would be a very hard choice. I was thinking the 280 would overclock better than the 280x and potentially close the gap even further. For some reason i also lean towards the 280 because its newer, does that make any difference in the real world or just in my head? Somehow i cant find any good benchmarks between the two.

A while ago i think i read that the 280x's have issues with artifacting. Im not sure how real that is but i imagine that it impacts their overclockability at least.

Either way this is definitely a question i need help with!

I don't think the 280 is newer than the 280x, and from the benchmarks I've seen for Gigabytes 280 OC (or was it MSI?) it won't overclock as well as you're hoping either.

I've been looking at cards for a budget rig to stopgap me between now and SkyLake, and I wrote off the 280. Not enough performance.

I mean it does completely depend on what games you play, at what resolution. Might work out just fine if you play older titles.

It is newer even if by just half a year. I guess it might be worth it and ill cut back on the case fans to save some.

It'd be worth it.

You're not overclocking anything else either really, so I highly doubt you'll raise the case temperatures enough to really warrant higher performance fans.

Youre probably right. I may change the fans later on if i have to. Too bad there arent many benchmarks around, i found quite a few reviews that state the 280 overclocks very well to the point its as fast if not faster than the stock 280x. Ill read some more on how the 280x overclocks and how the two compare when both overclocked. The price increase isnt that great but then i get dangerously close to considering a gtx 770 -.-

As much as picking parts is fun its also damn hard xD

Yeah. Here's the Sapphire review I read.

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6210/sapphire-radeon-r9-280-dual-x-3gb-oc-video-card-review/index15.html

They said the 280 isn't a card they'd recommend.

Can you get used video cards where you are? My dad picked up a 7970 for $100 the other week.

The 280 is just a 7950 really. So you can probably save quite a bit and get one of the "last generation" cards.

I opened a thread on used 290's yesterday and decided id rather go with a new card. There are plenty used 280's but those have all been used for mining quite extensively. I guess ill go with the 280x and be done with it. Thanks for your help.
