I am wondering if this is normal, or if anyone has experienced this before, or know why this has happened.

I recently installed a new motherboard. The old motherboard was an Asus m5a78lm lx plus. The new motherboard is a MSI 990fxa-gd65v2. The idle temp when using my asus motherboard was always 30 degrees or lower.  My idle temperatures with this new motherboard are around 37-40 degrees C. I thought maybe I did not place the cooler on correctly, so I removed it, cleaned all thermal compound off, and re-installed again, fresh thermal compound, careful to sit it properly.  Same higher temperatures results.

Things I've noticed: Asus board had a 4 pin CPU power connector.  The MSI motherboard uses an 8 pin CPU power connector.  Using more power? Therefore running hotter?

Is there some kind of power saving setting that the ASUS board was using, and the MSI board is not using, or needs to be enabled?  Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Having a 4-pin or 8-pin won't matter. The CPU will only use the power it needs - it won't take more.

If your voltages in BIOS are set to auto, they are probably different between the two boards.

Another possible cause, like what you have stated, are some of the power-saving features that may be enabled/disabled by default.

BTW, what are the rest of your system specs?

Maybe its your paste/compound. Or you have more background apps running than before?

Not running any more background apps than before. I haven't had time to dig into Eco settings and voltage just yet. Probably search more tomorrow.

As far as paste/compound:  I did use a new compound. The compound I was using on the first, ASUS motherboard, was the thermal compound that was included when I purchased my Arctic cpu cooler. The thermal compound I used to install into the new, MSI board was "Antec Formula 7 Nano Diamond thermal compound"

The manual of the Arctic CPU Cooler stated to not use any other thermal compound, than the one they provided (which is "Arctic cooling MX-4 thermal compound". That's what it says on the little syringe it came in anyway.) I was not sure if they just wanted me to buy their brand or what not. Maybe it was true. The heat sink tubes for the Arctic are copper, and they are direct contact to the CPU. Should this influence thermal compound selection?
