Which is best for data safety in a home server running windows home server 2011? Raid or Backups? If raid, which one? software or hardware?

PS: If it's raid and I need a raid card, How do i know which raid cards are good are which are bad?

Thanks for any help!!!!

If you have another computer to use as a backup device, then just backing up the computer would be the safest and cheapest way.

backup is almost always more reliable than the most complex raid array you can build inside your PC.

Is a 4TB USB3 external hdd good for backup? Or should I use esata?

RAID isnt a backup. You still need to back up even if you use RAID.

You can set up automated backups to Amazon S3 or Google Drive, or a local hard drive using Duplicati.

LSI raid cards are good, but if youre just doing RAID1 or RAID10 then your onboard RAID controller will be fine.

Are the onboard raid controllers on the drives, mobo's? what?

It would be better if you just had another computer that you booted up everyonce in a while to do a backup. But yes as long as the computer has a USB 3.0 port that will work fine as long as your storage doesn't go over 4tbs.

Yes it is good enough. What do you want to backup? How regularly will you backup? Is your data mission critical? What would it take to replace the data if you lose it?

I'm wanting to backup everything on my home server. Define "mission critical". what do you mean by your last question?

mission critical data is the data most important to your work and whose loss will stop your work in its track.

Since its a home server ~ I suppose you do not have that kind of work related data on it.

Some files are easily replaced whereas some take a lot of effort e.g. if you lose anything in your download folder, you can easily replace it by downloading again; but if you lose anything in your documents folder, you may have to recreate/ rewrite the whole document yourself.

Well, idk if im gonna have any mission critical data on it. And I was thinking that I could just use raid to rebuild lost data. BTW, is this board ok? http://www.microcenter.com/product/433109/H97M-ITX_1150_mITX_Intel_Motherboard
