Businesses today rely on the mainframe to:

  • Perform large-scale transaction processing (thousands of transactions per second)
  • Support thousands of users and application programs concurrently accessing numerous resources
  • Manage terabytes of information in databases
  • Handle large-bandwidth communication

This. It comes especially handy in an organization where you can have one central mainframe and several thin clients spread as individual computers.

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

Mainframes are large computer systems for heavy data processing and computation.  Enterprise clients use them for crunching numbers if they have a lot of number-crunching that needs to be done in their line of work.

IBM does a lot of stuff :P Most of it is behind the scenes from a consumer's point of view, providing enterprise-level infrastructure and support to other companies, consulting, software, as well as a large research division that does a lot of broad research & development in computing, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and many other humanitarian-focused technology projects, exploring the frontiers of science to enhance the world through technology.  "Building a smarter planet", if you will.
