In the article it was sent to a Gmail address. So the email is on a Google server.

I don't think you understand what I meant. I have a gmail account, that I can use to forward to my own mail client, and even mail server. If my mail client has already downloaded the email. Google can delete it off of their servers and my own account, but not my server/client as it is saved locally.
