which exact model?

OC is done from the BIOS

but Z87 or Z97 boards will accept OC

H or B series don't really support OC

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I was looking at getting a 4690k and an ASUS H87M-PRO.

ASUS have shown screenshots of a 4690k running at 4.6ghz at 1.3volts on a H81. I've also seen screenshots of a 4770kl OC on a H85.

don't even try doing that

you are getting a K series CPU which is OCable and trying to run that CPU on a H or B board is just plain stupid

there are Z97 board which are not bad and don't cost much

How does overclocking work on ASUS's H87 motherboards?

You need a Z97 motherboard in order to overclock an i5-4690k.  There are rumors of overclock capable H97 motherboards, but they are extremely high end and it requires lots of updates and warranty voiding.  For the same price, you can get a Z97 motherboard that is overclock ready from the start, and comes with much more features.
