Decided to give Ubuntu a try. I currently have windows 8.1 on my rig and I want Ubuntu to be bootable from a different hard drive to the one with windows. I dont want to bother with liveCD or burninf the Iso to a disc or flas drive as I dont have either of those avaliable. Is there a way to make a hard drive/partition the bootable device for ubuntu using windows to do so?

I call my PC Buddy.   Why?  Who knows?

You will need to write the ISO to DVD or a USB stick, you are lucky because I set up dual booting with win7 and Ubuntu.

Steps:

1. Create a decent partition, 20GB or more should suffice. Ensure it's marked as unallocated.

2. Boot into the installer

3. When prompted about having an OS on it, say to install alongside.

4. Fill out other information.

5. Let installer run, get a cup of coffee

6. It will install GRUB boot loader, it's a bit of work to reinstall the Windows MBR and mod the WinMBR but if you want to I will show you.

EDIT: Derp, didn't read your post right. You will have to make a Ubuntu boot disc, unplug the drive with Windows and boot from the installer.

If you're fine with having it on the same harddrive just mount the ISO using your favorite application to do so and follow the installer. No need to burn an imagine or what ever. It really is that simple.

PowerISO maybe? Honestly the only software I've ever used is Daemon Tools, however I hear that comes with unavoidable malware these days. :(

PowerISO, thats the one! So just to be clear, its as simple as mounting the ISO and booting from that drive right?

You mount the ISO and run the installer, that should guide you through it just fine.

Ubuntu installation is getting tricky these days I have used old version of wubi which installed along side and needed no actual disk only mounted I so was enough. But last week I was trying to install Ubuntu 14 and it was giving me lots of trouble I had to burn iso to a disk n still it won't install along side windows using wubi :( it gives error at the verification stage will try first on virtual box this weekend as I suspect the iso is corrupted.

It is most easy, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Search "Disk Management"
  3. Select "Disk Management" in the results
  4. Right click on your Windows partition (it should be on Disk 0)
  5. Select "Shrink This Volume"
  6. It will query for disk space, this may take a while, feel free to brew some coffee or get around to laundry
  7. A pop-up will open requesting the size of the partition (in MB). Enter the desired amount.
  8. Run through the rest of the pop-up. Ensure that you leave it as UNALLOCATED SPACE.
  9. Congraz! You created an empty partition!

I installed mine by creating a blank partition, booting from the 14.04LTS .ISO on a flash stick, and telling it to install alongside. After the install, I put my Windows Recovery CD in and recreated the Windows MBR, booted into Windows, and modified the Windows MBR using EasyBCD 2.2, which created an option to boot to either Windows or a GRUB bootloader, which would load Ubuntu.

Wubi installations may be simple, but will lead to a slow experience. You may wrongfully blame performance issues on Linux, the method of installation. Properly installing directly onto its own disk partition(s) will allow for proper performance.

Hold on. So when you get past your BIOS Power-On Self Test, you get to the Windows Boot Manager. From there you can either boot straight into Windows or load GRUB (we have 2 bootloaders already) and from there you can select Ubuntu, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, memtest86 and... Windows? Man, I have never seen someone who has 2 ways to get into Windows.

I've done that for a long time, I barely boot into Windows tho. I just like the Windows Boot Manager, it feels more familiar to me. GRUB has been a bitch to me plenty of times.
