Ok, I'm doing some planning ahead and looking at computer components to build a serious gaming pc, what I have now isn't bad but I want the best eventually (If only I had a penny for every time that was said on the internet.)

So, I don't really know much about AMD (this one is the first I've ever owned), I've always used Intel pc's, so I could use some suggestions. Specifically I need a parts list, mainly mobo and cpu, for the most powerful possible amd gaming pc, not best, best would assume "value" I want the most powerful mobo and cpu combo possible for 4k. I will also being doing some work in sketchup make so I need to be able to render (I guess? I tried doing some things in it on this pc and ended up crashing the program, probably just my fault lol)

I've never used a radeon graphics card before so I know nothing about them, currently I have a gtx 660 that's working just fine. (despite the pointlessness of this being an apu computer... dont ask, noob mistake). If possible I would like to stick with nvidia, but if necessary I will switch over.

I am specifically looking to see what the price difference is between Intel and AMD for this type of performance. I am probably going to wait until the x99's come out before I make an actual decision.

Also, is there any word at all on what AMD is coming out with next as far as chipsets go?

Thank you all very much for any help you can provide.

Edit: Part of the reason that I am looking at AMD is because if your builds include fm2+ processors I can temporarily use my current fm2 processor in that motherboard, however I get the feeling that fm2/fm2+ is more for budget than performance. Also I have seen Linus's build guides. Being the smart businessman that he is, Linus always takes value into account in most of his builds, I am asking for a build without any budget consideration.

Ugh.... So... your budget? location? any things else you need like mouse/keyboard etc? what monitor resolution will you want?

FM boards are for intergrated graphics apus... biggest hint with AMD step down from top is usually best eg CPU wise the FX 9xxx series is just horribly oc'ed 8xxx series with them demanding more money

8350 being the cream of the crop and 290x is just a hotter marginally faster 290... in linus'es benchmarks their 290 beats their 290x and they OC'ed them both xD

So 8350 and 290 plug in everything else as you wish :P

To be honest with you, I don't think "ultimate" and AMD go together. The AM3+ platform is dead and the FM2+ platform is for budget, as you said. Intel has considerably more powerful CPUs. Just keep in mind that CPUs aren't really a limiting factor in gaming scenarios.

The AMD GPUs on the other hand are very good, and if you are looking for the "ultimate" gaming PC for 4K then 2 R9 290s or the R9 295X2 is probably your best bet. (or if you're really crazy, two 295X2s) You'll need a beefy PSU to match.

That cpu is a really poor choice. It would be better to go for the 8320 and overclock it. For the price of that cpu/board you could get an intel i7 setup.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking to see which products from AMD are their "top of the line". As I thought AMD is at a bit of a stand still it seems, fm2 being for budget and what not.

I'm trying to figure out whether or to buy now or wait till later, as Linus always suggests, it would seem that in this case waiting is the best idea.

I also just remembered that its AMD that makes the hardware inside the current gen consoles, which for me is a good reason to write off AMD (too much pcmasterrace? naaaah).

Ultimately I want a build capable of running games at 4k on ultra, I dont have a 4k monitor right now, but sometime down the road I'll pick one up, I'm just trying to see what the best possible choices are now, for being ready for all the awesome games currently in the pipeline.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm guessing my first instinct was right tho, wait for x99's to come out.

The purpose of this board is to give people advice so as they don't waste their money. The AMD FX-9590 is a really poor choice, even for an unlimited (Ultimate) budget. You are paying for an overclocked cpu first of all (Something that can easily be done by yourself) Secondly those cpu's run HOT as hell. You need a high end motherboard, and a lot of cooling to keep it under control.

The Intel i7 would perform a lot better, and for less money (By the time you factor in board/cooler)

If AMD brought out a cpu that was an intel beater, then I wouldn't have any problem speccing it. Until then AMD cpu's don't belong in an 'ultimate' pc.

I expect a Haswell-E will provide much better performance.

I am not arguing either. I was just pointing out that 'Ultimate' and 'AMD' don't belong in the same sentence when referring to cpu's. If I was doing an AMD spec I would go for the fx-8320 anyway and just overclock it myself.
