HDD Mounting

Go to solution Solved by flibberdipper,

As long as the HDD doesn't get moved around while it's on, you can place it pretty much however you want.

Hey guys, just wondering if it's ok to mount a HDD vertically? I thought i remember reading somewhere that it may cause damage? I really can't see how but i thought i might as well ask the collective. :)

I'm running out of room in my build, so i want to mount the hdd like this.

It's either that or some velcro onto the side of the PSU but i thought the PSU might damage the HDD as well, magnetic fields and all that.

Which would you go for?

Thanks.

You can mount it vertically, but it's not recommended. Avoid it if you can as shaking of the case can cause damage to a vertical hdd.

-edit-

the ssd can be mounted wherever you please, only the hdd could be at risk.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

I will make a Linus, and velcro the hdd to the PSU on the hdd sticker

the ssd, is no problem

So you think mounting the hdd to the psu wont cause any interference within the hdd?

Why only vertical though? I wouldn't think a hdd would know wether it's vertical, horizontal or even upside down.

Ok fair enough, does anyone have thought on velcro to the psu horizontally? Magnetic field from the psu gonna cause problems?

iirc, Google released a white paper harddrive failure, and in it I believe they said that orientation is not a factor.

It doesn't matter if it "knows", a car doesn't hve to know it crashed to break. Being full of mechanical components, placing it in a different position than was originally intended can cause damage.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Looking at various manufactures, they say various mounting positions has no effect on the hard drives lifespan.

Then you should have no problem, just know that it's not automatically true for every hdd

Hopefully the WD Black can handle it  :)

Pretty much out of any other option in my build now, a friend suggested i just use an external HDD but i know that'll start annoying me.
