I just got my XFX 290X back from RMA. They sent me a 290X DD Edition when I had a reference 290X. I did a quick OC and ran valley to see what I could get from it. Once the bench was finished, I checked GPU-Z and HOLY BALLS! My VRM temp was HOTTT! I know this is not safe, but with my reference 290X, my VRM temps were way lower. Take a look at these screenshots from GPU-Z.

Here were my OC settings I used

Xfx coolers just suck and the repair centre guys don't know what they are doing i had a broken 7970 send it back but they fixed it half still artifacts had to send it back another 4 times and then they finally fixed the problem.

Well they sent me a non reference card when I had a reference card. The new one I got is working good its just that VRM 1 temp is too hot.

They always do this I send a refrence 7970 and got a piece of shit double d back.

My reference 290X had better VRM temps. At least the core is way cooler.

Put it back on stock, run valley and see if it's your oc's fault. If it's not, then blame xfx

Lower your memory clock, but leave your core clock where it is. Monitor that.

The core clock gains are the best out of the two so focus on that being the highest while keeping those VRM's down via not having your mem OC so high.

It's a beast and doesn't need the MEM OC anyway :) So don't overclock both on this card, just the core clock as much as you can. (maybe core @ 1175mhz or higher with 1250mhz MEM)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Will buying higher quality thermal pads lower the vrm temps?

Probably not, it's just due to the design of the cooler. Just curious, why did you RMA your last one? Mine randomly crashes about once every 2-3 hrs of gaming and I I could get an aftermarket cooler back, it might be worth sending in...

Edit: Here's a XFX 290 DD Review (same thing basically) and they too had ridiculous VRM temps http://www.legitreviews.com/xfx-radeon-r9-290-double-dissipation-video-card-review_138612/12

Use after burner or something to make your own fan profile. That'll lower temps all around, for both the core and vrms.

Just ran my top card through furmark. The gpu reached 86C at 100% fan and the VRAM hit 109C. When I have both cards going they reach GPU temps in the 90s and the vram just slightly higher than before. This is in furmark full max load. I'm inclined not to worry. They are very hot cards.

Just ran a furmark run on my reference 290 and maxed out at 73C and 83C on the VRMs... to bad it sounds like a vacuum

I like those temps you have. Granted mine is blowing hot air right back at itself but still... definitely toasty in the summertime.

Yeah, I can only game in the evening/night or the mornings. Once it gets to ~83 F ambient in my room its not too fun anymore.
