I currently have (and regret) an AMD CPU, and wanted to switch to Intel. However, I would need to invest in both the motherboard and CPU (obviously), and was wondering if the performance difference would be great enough to justify the cost.

Ideally, (I haven't priced it out) I would buy something more powerful than my current setup, so if anyone has suggestions for Intel model and motherboard combo, that would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my current setup:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengence

CPU:AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core Processor

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780

Dual Monitor Setup (2x 1920 x 1080)

Storage: 1.5 TB HDD + 2x 250 GB Samsung EVO SSD

Also, I'm not looking just for more GHz and cores, I'm looking for a better all around performance increase. I do mild video and photo editing, mild programming, and heavy gaming.

Thanks for the help!

Honestly, for your workload, what you have is just fine.  An i7 would be overkill, and your 8350 will pretty much match the performance of an i5 4690k, especially if you overclock.  So I'd say no, but that's just my opinion.

Why do you regret having an AMD CPU?

Anyway, for what you want, an i5 4670K or 4690K, with a Z97 board is gonna be great, and also won't bottleneck your GTX 780.

To be honest , your current setup is good enough , but if you want a noticable difference you need to get a flagship product from intel (i3 or i5 is not going to cut it) probably an i7 4790k or 4770k should give you a noticable perfomance bump, But we're talking about waiting an extra 1-2 minutes or so with the encoding time difference(cpu horsepoewer wise) usually GPU carries out the full load, which overtime won't bother you , but decision is yours an i7 4770k or higher , nothing less , especially if you're into video editing..

Details separate people.

Haha, no, I have an Intel processor in my laptop, and am impressed by the performance. I also like Intel's SSDs and may invest in their technology in the future. Also, Intel's per-core performance seems much better than my current CPU (when comparing to an i7 4770K).

I am in the progress of switching to Intel right now, I need the i7 for faster render times and better performance in games probably not the most cost effective option but I was getting sick of bugs with my 8350 and other crap that's been afecting my pc
