Hey LTT,

I've been pulling my hair out today trying to fix this. So basically my computer is right next to the modem. So naturally I plug the ethernet cord from the modem into my computer. I've never had issues with this. Today I turned on my computer and the network wouldn't be identified due to a IP address config not being valid (no access what so ever). Fixed that with a youtube video. Now it says my modem is screwed. So I reset that. Then it says my gateway isn't right even though it is set to the IP Address of my modem. So after this I plugged my ethernet cable into my laptop, and it does the same thing. Can't Identify it! Everything works on wifi and my dads computer is also wired and working. I have no idea what to do now. It seems my end is eternally screwed up while everybody else is all good. My computer is pretty much rendered useless. Hopefully this is an easy fix. Any ideas?

Thanks!

EDIT: It turns out I've been connected to a coaxial ethernet adapter and have no access to the modem as it is in the wall. Any ideas now?

you might want to try resetting both the modem and router to factory defaults

No router in between me and the modem. Any way to reset a modem without physical access to it?

unplugging it? Also check your cable it might be tangled and or experiencing interference.

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

are you referring to the Laptop or the desktop?

update the LAN drivers

disable and re enable the LAN port

check in device manager and see if the LAN has a '!' sign on it

factory reset all the networks device, there should be a tiny reset button behind the device

get this device for cheap

usb3-lan.jpg

use it to verify if the LAN port is at fault or not

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Done all of that besides the last two. The modem is a wall, I can't get to it, at least I think.
