as title says, the usual amount of VM's run would be 2-3. budget doesn't matter but just so you know i'm looking at either a 8320 and 4670

CPU: i5 4670k i won the silicon lottery Cooler: Corsair H100i w/ 2x Corsair SP120 quiet editions Mobo: ASUS Z97 SABERTOOTH MARK 1 Ram: Corsair Platnums 16gb (4x4gb) Storage: Samsun 840 evo 256gb and random hard drives GPU: EVGA acx 2.0 gtx 980 PSU: Corsair RM 850w Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2 windowed

I would think that Intel would be the way to go for it.

 

VM's aren't generally multi-core optimized so the IPC of the Intel would reign supreme

or you could allocate different cores to each VM

i.e. 1-2 for main system, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 for other VMs

4670, Intel VT-D is great for running VMs.
