Basic questions about motherboards

Go to solution Solved by Tazman192,

Not all motherboards have wifi - most gaming ones dont as manufacturers correctly assume gamers will use a wired connection. If yours doesn't have built in wifi you can, as you said, pick up a wifi adapter for less than £8.

You don't need a soundcard. There was a point a few years ago that you would need soundcards if you were an audiophile, but nowadays onboard sound is more than adequate for an average user. That money is better spent on a GPU or a processor. Those are what make the performance difference when doing whatever tasks you'll be doing.

FYI: Your motherboard does not have wifi built in, but if that is an issue, the problem is easily rectified. This will do the job

Hi, I'm building my first pc and I have a few questions regarding the motherboard.

The first one has to do with wifi, does the motherboard I chose have wifi or do any motherboards have wifi? If not, should I buy one of those usb wifi receivers or should I buy an entire board.

And the second one is: do I still need a sound card or does the motherboard provide sound?

This is the motherboard I'm considering: ASUS Chipset 760G SKT AM3+DDR3/VGA mATX - M5A78L-M LX3

There are many new Motherboard with built in wifi ~ they have "AC" in their name(latest version of wifi available to consumers).
Yes you can use a wifi dongle but wireless AC built in motherboards have better reception and they can work on dual bands(2.4 and 5Ghz)
If the wireless AC motherboard is not in your budget ~ go with the USB dongle ~ you will not see much drop in speeds with a good one.
No, you do not need a discreet sound card in most cases. Are you using professional headphones or headphones with high impedance?
They are both mid level motherboard do not expect too much out of them.

Not evry Mobo have WiFi ( AC ), and that Mobo doesn't have it, so buy  a receiver with decent Speed so it wont bottleneck, or buy a premium Asus or MSi or Gigabyte Mobo that does have wifi onboard

the Mobo provide sound by default but it up to the quality of it, a standard Mobo doesn't Provide Very good quality Sound, some does like MSI Sound Blaster  onboard Audio

Just get an external adapter for your pc, don't buy a motherboard based on the fact it's got wifi or not. As for the soundcard, don't bother, it's not worth it. If you really want better sound, get better headphones. If you already have high end headphones get an external dac, only to eliminate any interference you might get inside the case (which is the only problem with integrated audio and dedicated sound cards have it too).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
