ehm no you dont. You only need 2x pcie 16x lanes.

Doesnt sli mean connecting two of the same graphics cards for better performance? Will I need it to crossfire?

Crossfire = 2/3/4 AMD Cards.

SLI = 2/3/4 Nvidia Cards.

For CF you only need a mobo with 2x pcie 16x slots. which run at least at 4x.

For SLI the motherboard needs a certificate and also 2x 16x which run at least at 8x.

yeah but afaik nvidia wants money for their certificate on the mobo and amd gives it for free so some boards only support CF and no SLI.

i am planning on getting a Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 ATX LGA1150, is this a motherboard suitable for cross firing a msi radeon r9 290?
