Solar Roadways

virtualTune

So I am not sure if this is old news, which is why I didn't want to make a post in the News forum, but for anyone like me who has missed it...

So a couple from Idaho had the idea to implement solar panels into the roads, sidewalks, driveways etc. The panels will have a hexagonal shape and are covered with a special glass profile that will protect the technology from any physical harm.

The main intention is of course to use it to generate electricity, but it could also be used to enahnce road visibilty at night or during heavy weather conditions using LEDs.

By programing different profiles into a set of these panels, you can rearrange a parking lot without having to repaint anything, a playground could turn from a soccerfield into a basketball court. They go on saying that the panels are pressure sensitive and can light up if a tree is blocking the road or a large animal is crossing the road.

Anyways, watch the video, which isn't boring btw. and see for yourself!

Also, there was an article about this a while ago on The Verge.

It's a repost.

It also won't work for various reasons, and there are various parts of this video that are misleading.

Thank you @SirRoderick I think that video needs to be shared with a lot more people.
