I have a old HP pavilion elite with a i7 960. and i was thinking i have a laptop specs below the only probem is i cant buy a GPU for a laptop :P so i was thinking if i get something like gtx 770 would the CPU still be fine? its a 8 core(4 core hyper threaded) at 3.2GHZ and 3.4Ghz turbo not sure what overclocking will do since its not unlocked.

but will the CPU hold the GPU back or should i just stay with the laptop and wait till it cant handle games anymore and get whole new system.

Needs Update

It's still a rather beefy CPU. Should be more than fine.

You have a still powerful cpu. And nahalems were all unlocked so you can overlock if you have a correct mobo. Id get the 770 and even at stock still have a potent system :)

Is the i7 960 the Desktop version of the CPU or the laptop version?  Your post is somewhat confusing and ambiguous.

I *assume* you mean that you have a regular desktop i7 960 laying around and want to know if you can build a sweet gaming PC around it? Short answer yes. Long answer: Hell yes!

I have the xeon equivalent of the i7-920 and it still kicks basically any games ass. It's still more than good enough for gaming. My GPU is still holding me back in some cases (HD 7950), so my CPU is still good for some time.

More than fine, you won't need to upgrade for quite some time.
