You won't see much of a difference from your onboard audio though.

Most onboard audio (except for most of the ones in the cheaper HP's) is better than a $30 sound card. The onboard chip in my OptiPlex 170L is pretty damn close to being better than my SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Digital.

Just adding 1 more: Asus xonar DG. But true to the above, if expecting a magical sound change from onboard, don't bother, you'll get disappointed....

Why do you need the sound card? maybe if you told us exactly what you need we could suggest a good product for that. As it stands, as others said, unless you have a very old or very cheap motherboard (entirely possible) you wouldn't get pretty much any improvement from a soundcard.
