With that kind of budget, you could go Ultra 4k.  Would have to run things at medium settings, but at least you would already have U4k.

This is what I got. I went with a xeon since it's pretty much an I7 just lower clock and can't be OCed. They do great for gaming tho. About on par with an I7 from what I've seen.

Overpriced mobo, Overkill SSD and PSU. It's great you have a big budget but better not spending it for what you dont need right ^^? for 1 GPU build~ 500W is enough, even for a 780Ti, so even with taking some overhead you shouldnt really buy over 650W PSU. Even for future 2 ways SLI, a 750-800W should already be enough

the i7 4790k is out~

You dont really need a 500GB SSD. I'd rather get a 250GB SSD and another 2TB HDD instead. Games dont benefit much from running on SSD over HDD, it will only make the loading times abit faster compare to HDD, while it game it's exactly the same, so try to only install the games that you play the most ATM on the SSD, and leave everything else (especially multiplayer game) on HDD.

Maybe drop the 295x2 and get two 290's? Will preform a bit slower but costs a lot less.

Yea, you can definitely save some money by going with Xfire 290s, but they won't be water cooled.

Going Ultra 4k is very feasible within this budget.

very true. I'm not a big 4K fan really tho. I'd prefer 3 1440P monitors over 1-2 4K's. just makes more sense to me.

idk man, I like doing hypothetical builds, I'm pretty on top of pricing and whatnot.  I did go over by $100... You could bring it within budget if you went with a less expensive keyboard, less expensive motherboard, only 120GB of SSD, or a different brand of 240GB, only 8GB of RAM, which is easily upgradeable anyways, and less expensive Case.  Also could be on the lookout for a less expensive 750 or 850W PSU. I know that a HX750W is available for $90 right now, but I wasn't sure if that would be enough for a 295X.

The ram (and possible the CPU cooling) is the only thing I would change. 1600Mhz ram or higher

The 240L is a great cooler, out does the H100I with the noctua fans on it. Also 1333 is fine for most tasks. If OP is doing video rendering then yeah 1600/1866 would be best. But my build has headroom in money so OP can change things as he wishes.

sadly 750watt is too little for the 295x2

800 watts is the minimum wattage you can go with that GPU

but i have a feeling Larry is into nVidia and EVGA

8GB RAM on a $3500 build does seem odd to me

If he is only gaming, 8GB is plenty, and it is easily upgradeable.  I would take 8GB to start if it means getting an Ultra 4k gaming machine.

Nah, the cooler is fine but I'm saying that Xeons run cool as they are, so you could save money by going air. If he has headroom (which he does), there is no reason NOT to go with 1600 Mhz. With 1440p and possibly 4K, everything counts right now so getting higher clocked ram wouldn't hurt.

true. I just went with this cooler as it is quite, and will make sure the xeon runs as cool as possible. Really a NHD-15 would be better for cheaper but, might not look as clean.

Id he's playing BF4 or hardline, you need like 24GB's cuz Battle log on firefox has a memory leak that uses 5-7GB's of ram.

I'm not kidding. I have a few friends that play BF and they all have a firefox usage for 80% of their ram. Only thing firfox is running is Battle log xD

I use firefox and I play BF4 + Netflix + Teamspeak/Ventrilo/Skype + Internet Browsing and the most RAM I am using is 5.5GB, and that is with the memory leak, because I am usually at 4.2GB.

lol. My friend has 16GB and he is at around a 65% usage with battle log+Teamspeak+monitoring software. Same with my other friend who has 8GB's, same stuff pretty muhc but hovers around 6GB's of sued memory.

I think the majority of people are doing just fine with 8GB of RAM, unless they are playing a heavily modded Skyrim.  Yes, 8GB for a $3.5k system is not ideal, but if going with 8GB to start allows me to go with a 295X2 and Ultra 4k monitor, then I will take the 8GB and upgrade down the line if I need it.
