Windows 8.1 scaling

Go to solution Solved by Geekazoid,

So here is my dilemma: I have two 27" monitors. One of them is 1440p and one is 1080p. Windows 8 thinks that the 1080p one is smaller and therefore treats it that way. This messes things up like moving from screen to screen etc. Is there any way to tell windows that the screens are the same size so that it can scale everything accordingly? I don't want to decrease the resolution on the 1440p monitor because that is why I got it in the first place. lol

Is there a place or a registry hack that you can do to adjust the PPI of a particular screen in order for scaling to be more uniform accross two displays that are the same size but different resolution?

thanks

The thing that I would do, although probably not the best pixel density wise, is create a custom resolution for the 27" 1080p display for 2560 x 1440. This way you can use your native 1440p monitor at it's native 1440p resolution and this should satisfy your needs well enough. :D

That would work, but I don't want to loose the extra screen realistate on the 1440p screen..  I was hoping that there was somewhere that I could spec the PPI of both the monitors to make it scale properly.

It is not possible. It is not a Windows thing, it's is that you are asking a magic trick. If you think about it (assuming you are buying the system), you'll see that you can't.

What I would suggest, is simply tell Windows that the 1080p monitor is positions next to the 1440p monitor, but at the top. You do this in the Screen Resolution panel of Windows. You see 2 monitors, you can drag them and move them. Why the top? It is unlikely that you'll drag a window from the bottom, but rather the top. But feel free to adjust this. You can pick top, middle or bottom.

Right now I have it set to the middle of the 1440p one. I knew that it wasn't nativly supported, I was just wondering if there was a hack or something to trick windows into scaling properly accross two equally sized monitors with different resolutions.

I lay it down that this is a very intricate question.

I LOVE THIS IDEA! I will try to google this right away. lol  :P

Edit: So I was able to do this by creating a custom resolution with the Nvidia control panel. Solved my problems. Thanks!

No worries mate, glad to help. I just suggested what I would do given your current situation. I know that 2560 x 1440 doesn't look quite right on a 23" monitor but I would imagine that it'd be pretty decent on a 27" 1080p monitor. How have you been finding it in comparison to your native 2560 x 1440 monitor?

You should post a pic because I'm curious to see how it fairs in comparison to a native 1440p display.

Text actually really sucks on it, but I mostly just have PDF's and Skype open on that screen so it's not too bad. I will try to post a pic if I can remember.

Well yea. I don't recommend what was suggested, as it rendered the screen pretty much useless.

But if works out for you, then good.
