I swapped my ram out from 2x8gb ddr5 cl38 6000 to 1x16 cl40 5200 and after a bit of troubleshooting, i came to realize that it just takes over 2 entire minutes to memory train before it posts the first time.
I tested on two different pcs, same result, or maybe the second one was slightly faster which made me realize the ram was actually working.

is this actually normal? the 2x8 takes like 3 seconds to memory train or whatever, its basically instant, so it threw me off completely. in the back of my mind I was thinking the long delays people talk about are for higher ram capacities

Every time or only 1st time? If only first time, I'd not worry about it.

Also, AMD or Intel?

I'm curious why you downgraded your RAM.

i was borrowing the 2x8 from another pc until mine came in because the seller decided to take 6 days off before shipping it 😞
the idea was i get one now and can live with it until the price comes down on a second dimm later

That's fair. It's not a GREAT approach since installing mismatched sticks can be tricky and you'll lose a lot of performance over 2x8, but it's a bad market and you aren't the only one doing it.

I was just confused because you were taking out a dual-channel kit that was also faster so it seemed strange you were taking a ~60% bandwidth downgrade.

yeah, it is what it is though.
there shouldnt be a mismatch in the end, the one dimm i got, i should be able to get another one of the same brand easily in a year because they sold a ton of em.
