First time builder here. I cannot get the motherboard to align with the stays to screw in. The IO shield (which is preattached) looks to be in the correct place, yet the position of the stays seem to want it to go further through the hole in the case, which it will not go, no matter how much force I use. In this position, the stays on the top row are only half visible through the holes in the motherboard, so cannot be screwed into. I've double checked for obstructions from cables, but there is nothing I can spot that would be in the way. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is there a problem with the motherboard or case, and if so is there anything I can do to fix it?

Motherboard: MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi (ATX form factor)

Case: Cooler Master N400

Hey, welcome to the Forum.

Can you take a few more pictures of the back of the case like the first picture in your post?
Take it from a few different angles and distances.

Something looks a bit off.

Align your board with the holes first, seems you've pushed the I/O shield out of place then holes don't align anymore

It does seem to be at a slight angle. I have tried tilting the motherboard, but still wasn't able to get it to fit.

I couldn't align the board with the holes in the first place, hence the issue. This motherboard comes with the I/O shield pre-attached.

It probably wouldn't be a problem if some screws are missing

In its current orientation, I can't get the entire top row of screws in, which would be more of a problem.

I understand your concern but I doubt it's necessary.

Recently I saw a video where someone tried to brake a motherboard, it wasn't easy.

You could just try it, mount the cooler and move it slightly to assess the weakness.

(also you could slightly unscrew the stand-offs to have them slightly moving)

That does look okay.  You don't really need all screws in the motherboard to be able to use it safely.

I ran with only 2 screws in my board for many years.

It does look okay how it sits now though, are you able to use at least one screw at the top?

Did you install the standoffs into the case yourself? If so, is the standoff I circled in red slightly taller than the others, almost as if it would fit through a mounting screw hole in the motherboard? If yes, move it to the center where it's supposed to be, then try to position the motherboard again.

Not all cases / standoffs are like this. I personally don't like these because the tolerances should not be this tight and you can accidentally scratch the back of the motherboard if things go sideways during installation, but otherwise they exist to help align the motherboard during installation.

Also, for the record, the forum supports uploading images directly, after which they are easier to view than hosting them externally.

Good spot. That stay was indeed slightly different. The top didn't want to go into the motherboard's centre hole, so I removed it entirely and was able to align and screw in the other eight holes, which judging by the other replies should be sufficient. Thanks everyone for your help.
