Hey LTT,

Basically as the title says, are non-Sata SSD's worth it? Are they really that much faster than my current SSD? (Evo)

I'm looking for another SSD to add to my SSD Only build. Would getting a 256gb PCI-E SSD make sense over another Evo?

Thanks!

PCI-E is the future of SSDs, though unless you're using it to install your games, it's not worth it. (In my opinion of course)

SSDs are already fast enough for most situations.

It's mostly for faster loading times in BF4 so I can get all da vehicles to be honest.

Yes, like I said, only if you want the fastest loading times. It's not really worth it.

So true... If only I could fly a helicopter without crashing it withing 10 seconds...

Personally, I would buy an EVO, and wait and see what happens with M.2 and Sata Express. The max (theoretical) r/w times on that would be 1250MBps (10Gbps, do not confuse bits and bytes!)... I've seen a few M.2 drives that have come close, but at the moment, I think only PCI-E drives have reached speeds similar to this. Although, an X4 slot on PCI-E would have 32Gbps... which is definitely alot more.

I think sata express will make pci-e ssds irrelavent

Not necessarily. SATA Express is the clunkiest interface I've seen in a while, almost as bad as IDE. I don't see myself using it.

IDE wasn't so bad. I actually still rely on it.

:P Me too, got an old ASUS DVD R/W drive. It's good enough for what it is, but the ribbon cable I have for it is ugly...

and pcie isnt? I dont know about you but i would rather use a dedicated interface for storage rather than wasting the pcie slot that could be used for other peripherals

I still have an old 320GB IDE hard drive in my current rig. I am using it because I was down to 7 GB in my SATA drive.

Being 15 means I basically have no idea what a ribbon cable is... I always thought that was the 24 pin in old computers...

NO. Why? They are so much more expensive and unless you get into the 1500$+ ones they aren't even faster than a EVO with rapid mode enabled.

Is that a Sata power? (M/B is motherboard right?)

That's IDE, it was for old HDDs and DVD R/W drives. And, yes, M/B means motherboard.

I'd go for it if you've got a ton of money and the free slot. They're no cheap, though. I'd only get one in the $700 range from Intel at the moment.

170,000 iops is about twice as fast as a Samsung 840 Evo

170,000 (Iops) * 4 (KB per IO) / 1024 gives us 664 mbps.

98,000 * 4 /1024 gives us 382.

We're talking about Random 4K read here. Sequential writes on the Intel drives will pwn samsung.

Of course it's going to be faster, I just don't think it's worth the money for PCI-e SSDs. I still think M.2 is be going to be the next standard for SSDs.
