Hello everyone,

My printer just shxt the bed and im in need of a new printer. I've even reading that brother printers are pretty good and I was wondering what everyone has to say.

I want the printer to have a ethernet port at the back of it and be on the cheaper side. Don't need a laser one or anything crazy, its just for me and my wife.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll always recommend a used office-grade color laser printer. You might even be able to find one for cheap or free on Facebook Marketplace that just needs new rollers (inexpensive parts) or new toner. That's how I got my Canon ImageCLASS multifunction printer for the low, low price of "come get it out of my way".

Don't let the cost of toner cartridges scare you off. They last a lot longer than inkjet cartridges, and they don't stop working if you don't use them regularly like inkjets do. That long shelf life more than makes up the upfront price difference. Third party cartridges are usually a fraction of the price of OEM, and they're just as good.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

The thing is that inkjet printers are far less reliable than laser printers, and that's why I bought a good laser one. I see it as a one-time larger investment vs buying a new inkjet cartridge every few weeks.

I am still using the laser toner cartridge the previous owner of my printer left in it - that is how long they last. Also, laser printers have no parts which could dry up over time, so you could go 6 months or more without printing and still have great quality prints.

Laser printers are great for text and similar applications,

If you need to print photos often, then buy a printer with an ink "reservoir"- like the Epson Ecotank (I have no experience with htis in particular but they are recommended often)

As you can tell from my writing, I really like my Brother laser printer. It "just works".

I have a Brother one with tanks, and I can highly recommend it.

@Computersarethebest Brother calls them "INKvestment" , "Tankbenefit", and “Inkbenefit"
Because why have one name when you can multiple names for different markets? /s (so stupid)

@Needfuldoer
I have a Brother DCP-720DW (tank), 4 years old and still printing great.

I don’t print regularly, sometimes months will pass between prints, and other times I’ll print hundreds of pages in a day.
Anyhow, it hasn't clogged yet. I keep it plugged in and let the printer do its thing.
It automatically wakes from sleep about once a week, does a quick self-clean, and goes back to sleep.

I went from inkjet (with cartridges) to laser, and then back to inkjet (with tanks).
Maybe I was unlucky, but all of my laser printers were flawed.
I had:

Spoiler

- Samsung (color, can’t remember the model name, it wasn't cheap) that died two months out of warranty.
Not to mention that replacing four toners wasn't exactly cheap, even with third-party options.
- Had a Xerox Phaser 3020 (mono). I bought it because it was cheap and available for in-store pickup, as I needed something quickly. That thing really liked paper jams, so I gave it away.
- Then there was the Xerox WorkCentre 3025 (mono). It actually printed fine, but it had the worst software experience ever. It auto-wastes paper & toner on power-on by printing a diagnostics page, and I couldn't change that because it asked for a PIN I never set. Plus, I know most printers have poor WiFi/network implementation, but this was ass on another level. I quickly got fed up with it and gave that one away as well.

Last but not least... sure most of of the time you don't need color, but a day will come when you want or need color and you don't have it.
So my hot take, tank > laser. 😄

i just have a brother color led printer and it just exists on my network for months on end. sure it wont do a good job of photo printing, but most cheap inkjets wont either, and i dont have to worry about ink drying up with toner.

on a sidenote, brother is pretty much the only brand that sells their printers with a full set of actually full toners. so that initial $200 purchase of a color led printer gets you your first 1000 or so pages.

Soooooo I just got the printer and its honestly epic, fits perfectly where I want it and it prints so damn fast.

One question that I have is why is the app showing that its connected via wifi when I have it plugged into ethernet and my switch sees it and ethernet says active on the app?

I know im nit picking but how do I change this icon or can I even change it?
