The restaurant I work for is currently considering a change in POS systems. I’d like to suggest that we explore sourcing our own hardware for stations that don’t require a full register.

 

Square offers tablets at a relatively high price point (approximately $799 per unit). Based on past experience, the provided devices often feel dated for the cost, and I believe we could achieve better value and performance by sourcing our own equipment.

 

According to Square’s published requirements, the POS app supports Android 7+ and iOS 14+. From a cost standpoint, Android tablets appear to be the most practical option when deploying multiple devices.
While there are many low-cost options available through sites such as AliExpress, I’m not familiar enough with their hardware standards, and potential malware or security risks would be unacceptable given our service volume and payment processing needs.

 

I’m looking for feedback or recommendations on reliable, cost-effective tablet options that would meet Square’s requirements while maintaining security and performance. My goal is to help reduce costs for a family-owned and operated grill and bar without sacrificing reliability.

That's interesting, because some super cute "phone" form factor terminals for portable POS are on the square UK website for a quarter of that price. Card reader, barcode scanner, table waiting ordering capability. Does it really need to be a full size tablet?

I would strongly consider the benefits of official first party hardware in a situation like this - consider the benefits of full support!
