If you're purely gaming, save your money and get an i5. Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to get the latest generation?

If they cost about the same and you could get either, obviously get the 4790k.

Either CPUs will do fine for gaming.  Buy what you want/afford  (i5 is cheaper, but i7 if you want/afford).  IF you had a 4770k I'd say stay with it. The performance gain isn't anything special.  Newer builds should get Z97 Motherboards though.

im gonna build my gaming rig nxt week and im

thinking about this things should i get 4770k or 4790k?

The new one. It is like 10 dollars more on Microcenter preorder. Think it is 279 compared to 269. 10 bucks is worth not getting stuck at possibly 4.1-4.2 ghz. The I5 is 199 compared to 189.

It might not be night and day for those that got lucky on a 4770k/4670k, but as a new build?  As Tali would say. Totally worth it.

Now I5 or I7? For gaming I would go I5 and get the biggest damn GPU you can get. Witcher 3 is coming. I would take a I5 and a r9 290 all day over a GTX 770 and a I7 or a 780ti all day over a GTX 780 and an I7. If you stream and render a lot? Well then the I7 can be worth it.

The I5 isn't exactly horrible at streaming though. Single player games will stream just fine on it and it isn't too bad at multiplayer either. I have the I7 but it isn't for gaming.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. Case: HAF 912 stock fans (no LED crap). HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB. Display: Dell S2340M IPS. GPU: Sapphire Tri-x R9 290. PSU:CX600M OS: Win 7 64 bit/Mac OS X Mavericks, dual boot Hackintosh.
