i was planning to get a grapics card for my first gaming build and i checked out a price list of a known shop in singapore.

http://www.cybermind.com.sg/pdf-upload/pricelists/cybermind.pdf

i realized there are 2 diffrent kinds of grapic cards for gaming use

One of them is called Nvidia Geforce and the other is AMD Radeon

other then the price diffrence, what other diffrencece are there between the cards?

and what brands should i trust between the brands on the list?

i'm intrested in playing BattleField 3 and 4, Gundam Force IV,Gundam Seed Strike Force,Titans Fall,Batman Arkham, Bioshock infinite and racing  games (any good racing games you can suggest).

Let me know which i should get and why?

my price range for the grapic cards are around $500 to $550

thank you for your assistance.

Alrighty, then look for GTX780 or R9 280x, same (asus/gigabyte) models as above.

My picks, from best to worst.

Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X (469 SGD)

PowerColor R9 280X TurboDuo (435 SGD)

Leadtek GTX 770 Dual Fan 2 GB (489 SGD)

Sapphire R9 280X Toxic (489 SGD)

If you don't care about power consumption and are sure your power supply is good enough for an R9 290, get the Sapphire R9 280X Toxic. It's the fastest R9 280X around, beating even non-reference GTX 770s, but it consumes almost as much power as an R9 290.

Rig: Intel Core i7-2600 / Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X / 2 x 8 GB DDR3-1600 / Seagate Hybrid SSHD 2 TB / FSP500-60APN 500W / 3x 20" 1600x900 LED / 51" Samsung F5000 plasma / Acer K330 LED projector
15.6" Clevo W650SJ: Intel Core i7-4810MQ / Geforce GTX 850M / 1 x 8 GB DDR3-1600 / Hitachi 1 TB 7200 rpm
14" Lenovo Y460: Intel Core i5-520M / Mobility Radeon HD 5650 / 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1333 / Hitachi 500 GB 5400 rpm

this card is also just in my budget of $550

is it a good choice?

PowerColor R9-290 OC 4GB GDDR5 $549

Big fat no. That R9 290 uses a reference cooler. I would never consider a reference cooler R9 290 or 290X because it will throttle down a lot, which reduces performance. Not to mention it will be hot and noisy. If you will get an R9 290 or 290X, make sure it uses a non-reference cooler.

I updated the listed in my previous post to include the Sapphire R9 280X Toxic edition. It's the fastest you can get in R9 280X and GTX 770 poolset. However, it does consume a lot of power, almost as much as an R9 290, but it's still not as fast as an R9 290.

whats the diffrence with refrence and non-refrence?

Aren't they the same thing?

No. The reference cooler uses AMD's cooler design. That's why we call it reference. AMD's cooler design for the R9 290 and 290X isn't very good, and temperatures will always reach the 95C ceiling. That's why the reference R9 290 and 290Xs are cheap. Reference cards, AMD or Nvidia, are usually always cheaper because they don't perform as good as third party coolers.

This is what a reference R9 290 or 290X looks like:

reference uses a different cooler which (on the amd side) sucks like hell.

sometimes they also make a completely now pcb with better power phase design and such for better overclockinh but its really only the cooler that matters.
