Upgrading from a hand-me-down GPU

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forum, I decided to join since I just purchased parts for my first 'custom build'.

I'm using a AMD FX8350 CPU with 4X 4GB G.Skill RipJaws X 1866MHz Ram in a Asus M5A78LM/USB3 motherboard & a 500W PSU.

For the graphics card, I am still hanging on to a hand-me-down Sapphire HD 4650 with 1GB RAM, but I think it is finally time for an upgrade :)

I've got about £250 in my budget & was thinking about the MSI Geforce GTX 760 Hawk -

Do you think this is a good upgrade? I know the colour of the accents is not really important, but does anyone do a black & blue GFX card?

Thanks for the help!

Matthew Stratford

Matthew Stratford

Yes it's a good card, but for that money I'd get an AMD R9 280X, or  GTX 770.

Like this 280x, only £205.

Or this GTX 770, £228

For a little bit more (£284) you can get this ridiculously good deal on an AMD R9 290 Tri X from Sapphire, card has an RRP of £400 and is comparable to GTX 780.

Your best choise would be a EVGA GTX 770 but that is a little bit over your budget but well worth it.

Otherwise go for the EVGA GTX 760 but the 770 is totally worth it.

Or look for a AMD 280x from Msi or Asus.

A gtx 760 will definitely by a nice upgrade for you, but (judging from amazon.co.uk) shouldn't you be able to afford a better GPU with 250£? On amazon there are gtx 770s or r9 280x's for that money, which would outperform the 760 by a fair bit.

I find that hwcompare and gpuboss are useless.

From looking up benchmarks on Tomshardware, the 4650 can barely reach a playable 30fps in Crysis and can't play Far Cry 2. The 770 can max BF4 at 60fps easily.

I can certianly say that the 4650 really struggles at anything HD :)

NVM didnt read properly lol, saw one at £239 and saw one at £319 below and got confused.

Here's the one at 239, 2nd hand though and probably an ex miner so I'd avoid.
