Floatplane vs. Youtube Premium

Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

Don't have the exclusives on YT, or at least not all. Also premium doesn't bypass the sponsor spots on its own.

Been a Floatplane sub for a couple years.  Just recently upgraded youtube to premium so no more ads.  Now Im on teh fence re:floatplane.  I have no complaints, nor am I rage quiting etc.  Just feels redundant.  So folks im looking for motivation to keep the plane afloat 🙂

I am not subbed to floatplane but its something I am considering.

Doesn't floatplane offer a lot more behind the scenes and extra footage that is cut out of regular LTT Youtube videos?

Yes. I have the $3 sub as an OG subscriber. It has a lot of BTS content.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Youtube Premium is just Youtube without ads, downloads and higher quality. You don't get channel subscriber benefits with that, So in order to get exclusive content and deals, you would need to subscribe to LTT channels (individually because YT doesn't have network subscriptions). Though only benefit would be exclusive content with YT channel membership. If you have true-OG ($3 tier) or newer old-support tier with $5, those both are better value than YT membership. The price-hiked basic tier gives actual competition to YT channel subscription.

I’ve been subscribed to Floatplane for the past few months, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to stream content reliably due to slow bitrate which causes frequent buffering. Because of that, I’ve been reconsidering my subscription.

Before canceling, I noticed that I’m currently grandfathered into the $5 tier despite the recent price increase, which I really appreciate. I wanted to clarify how this works before making a decision.

Is the grandfathered $5 tier treated the same way as the original $3 OG tier? Specifically, if I cancel my subscription, even for an extended period, would I lose my grandfathered status and be required to re-subscribe at the new $8 tier? Or would I still be eligible to return at the $5 rate?

If you are no longer a subscriber, you lose your grandfathered price. You would be paying the new price if you come back.

BUT.

And I don't know why this seems to be such a foreign concept to so many people... But you don't need to be subbed 12 months a year.

Watch on youtube and once or twice a year, subscribe to floatplane to binge watch/download the exclusive content. Then promptly unsub once you've seen everything you wanted.

Not gonna lie, you do actually make sense. I have subbed for over 6 months now, and I literally got 2 days' worth of streaming activity on Floatplan,e mainly because of the bitrate issue. I need high-speed internet to have a reasonable experience, but that will only happen over my company's network. If I am working, I cannot spend the entire day streaming.

I remember once Linus said this in WAN show. but I hoped I could be a permanent supporter, but I cannot, if YT addin matched the price with the same benfit I would have paid there.

You could always buy something on the store to support them. And you get some good quality product in exchange.

I am not from the shipment-supported countries, and importing will cost three times as much money, so I would rather stick to digital products, which I can control most of the time.

There is one thing that would really be a plus, at least for me.  A roku app for FP.   I tend to watch all the LTT stuff in my living room via my Roku.  If there as a FP app I could use, I would, however as its lacking I use YT, which kinda brings this full circle.   Maybe use Claude or some other AI to try and Vibe Code a Roku client and use that exercise to make some content - Ltt Vibe Coding demo. or some such.....
