Hi guys, I bought a pair of V Moda XS headphones 2 months ago and yesterday I started hearing crackling noises while listening to music. Do you think it is worth getting a replacement cable to see if that fixes it, or do you think the entire headphone itself is broken?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

First, if you haven't already, try it with a different sources, like your ipod, smartphones, etc.

Second, try using other cheap cables laying around. It should be mini-to-mini. It's originally TRRS plug, I think, but regular stereo mini to mini cable should give sounds, just for checking if the crackling is still there or not. If it's gone, then it's your cable, go ahead and get a replacement, if you think that's the way to go (some people think cable replacements are overpriced)

Third, if after 2 steps above you still got the crackling, then it's your headphone itself. RMA it.

When headphones "break", is it usually the cable's problem and not the actual headphone speakers? Most headphones don't have detachable cables so people assume the speakers themselves break but is it usually the cable?

Hard to say immediately, because they work as a unity. Think of it like a PC. When your PC gives error, like won't boot, etc, it could be numerous possibilities of problems. Could be the RAM, processor, mobo, well you get the idea.

That's why further testings are needed, to isolate the problem by analyzing the symptoms, like my first post above.

Depends on the symptoms of the break.

Okay just went to the store and they were unable to offer me replacement cables but I borrowed a Monster audio cable and I heard no crackling noises when using it for a couple of minutes. However, it took me around 5 minutes to start hearing crackling noises when I used the headphones at home last night so I'm not sure what the problem is yet. Hopefully it's the cable.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

From this, it's most probably the cable, although can't really rule out the possibility of your PC, or onboard audio to be exact. If only you tried the replacement cable plugged directly to your PC.

You have other headphones or IEMs? Try plugging it to your PC and use it for 1 hour (just to be sure). If they're okay, then yeah, it's the cable
