If you go for the r9 290x, save yourself some money and get the r9 290(non-x), there is only a 7% perfomance differance you can easily get back with overclocking

Either one is good for gaming it comes down to the features of each card research it abit and see which one is better for your use case.

If you go with amd: sapphire, msi, asus (not the dcii cooler), gigabyte (even though they're ugly)

If you go with nvidia: evga, msi, asus, gigabyte (even though they're ugly)

There's no model specifically better for gaming and it varies from different coolers and designs.
