Hi,

I have a Thermaltake Toughpower 750W and I'm in the process of upgrading my PC. The goal is to replace as few parts of possible. I currently have a 2600X and a 3070, which I would like to replace with a 5800X/XT and ideally a 9070XT. Now I'm seeing different voices online, and I'm not sure if that PSU would be powerful enough for that setup. I'm open to getting 9070 or a 5070Ti instead. What would your recommendation?

Thanks!

What exact Toughpower 750w do you have? There are so many different models.

A 750w is plenty for a 9070 XT/5070 Ti and a Ryzen 5800/XT.

My recommendation would be to check the numbers yourself

Gave PCPP a 5800x and a 9070xt and it comes out at about 410w

Factoring in the other components, it would be over 500w (and I am being VERY generous here by putting 500w as a ceiling) so a 750w PSU would be more than enough

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

I wouldn't trust PCPP since AMD themselves recommends 750W at the minimum, and most of the builds I'm seeing have a 850W PSU.

Illogical

Not a reason to count out a 750w or an argument against it TBH

2 words, 1 dumb concept for that

Future proofing

Thats because they need to cover their own asses incase someone runs a overclocked 14900k that draws 300+ watts 🙂

A 750w is fine for a 5800x/XT and a 9070 XT, dont worry.

I ran a 750w with my overclocked RTX 4080 and overclocked intel 9900k for a while.

The PSU is getting up there in age, when did you buy it?

When it says Haswell Ready as a feature, you know its getting on in years.

That's a helpful reply, thanks!

So the reason I'm worried was that I actually bought that PSU back in 2020 because my Vega 56 couldn't be handled by my previous 400W PSU. Even though that GPU was supposed to consume less than 200W or so with the low power BIOS (there was a physical switch on the card), it was still having micro-spikes that would make the PC reboot. I really want to avoid that.

So that is why I would rather avoid living on the edge. The 5070Ti and the 9070 have a much lower TDP, so I don't mind saving money while enjoying the extra peace of mind. I've always been luckier on the Nvidia side in terms of power consumption.

Now that you know the PSU model and its age, would you still recommend going for a 9070XT?

The 9070 XT and 5070 Ti are very equal in terms of power draw.

Here is an 18 game average power draw at 4k.

The PSU is a B- on the Tierlist so its on the middle of the tree. Its not terrible.

I would say its okay to use it with a 9070 XT and a 5800x, with the intention of upgrading at some point.

I just dont know the age of this PSU.

I got in 2020. I haven't used it all the time though, since I've been doing most of my work on my laptop during the week. But yeah, does it mean that I should already consider upgrading it? Would going for a less powerful GPU mean that I could keep the PSU for a longer period?

I don't want to spend too much on upgrades since I'll be mostly working on my laptop, the desktop is for gaming and potential experimentations.
