Hi all,

I’m currently in the process of putting together a new build, as my current machine (i7 8700K & 1080ti) is now on its last legs.

I’ve decided to go with the following components for the new build:

  • NZXT H9 Flow RGB (2025)

  • Gigabyte AMD X870E AORUS PRO

  • AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

  • Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 420

  • Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum RGB Grey 64GB 6000MHz AMD EXPO DDR5 Memory Kit

  • Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 WINDFORCE OC SFF 16GB Blackwell Graphics Card

  • Seasonic FOCUS GX 1000 Watt PCIE 5.1 Fully Modular 80+ Gold Quiet PSU, ATX 3.1

  • Alienware AW3225QF 32" 4K UHD (3840x2160) 1700R Curved Gaming Monitor, 240Hz, QD OLED

My main question concerns the graphics card. I’m a little torn at the moment, as I’m wondering whether it’s worth waiting for the 5080 Super or simply going ahead with the standard 5080. My reasoning for waiting is that, as my intention is to game at 4K on a 32" 240Hz monitor, the additional 6GB of VRAM on the Super could prove useful. That said, I suspect the wait could be considerable — if I can even secure one at launch — and the release pricing is anyone’s guess.

As an alternative, I’ve also considered saving some money by opting for the 9070 XT, as there doesn’t appear to be a huge difference between it and the 5080. However, I’ve always been an NVIDIA fan, so I’m a little unsure.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

In most regions, the 5070 Ti is more than 25% cheaper than the 5080 while being only 10-15% slower.

Another consideration is that the rumored Super cards keep getting their rumored release date bumped up. It's looking like they might launch as soon as October, so getting a 5070-5080 class card right now might be a mistake depending on how that launch goes.

If your target is 4K/240Hz, VRAM headroom does matter, 16GB on the 5080 can be fine today, but a year or two down the line you’ll be glad to have 22GB on the Super. On the flip side, the 5080 itself is already overkill for current titles at 4K, so it really comes down to how patient you are. If you want to build now, the standard 5080 will smash 4K/240Hz. If you don’t mind waiting and potentially paying more, the Super buys you extra longevity. As for the 9070 XT, great value, but if you’ve always been on the green team and already invested in a QD-OLED panel, I’d stay NVIDIA.

What games does a 5080, bring only 15% faster than a 5070ti, smash 4k/240hz when the 5070ti is rarely recommended for 4k?

How is a 5080 overkill for 4k?

Σε ποια παιχνίδια κάνει ένας 5080, που φέρνει μόνο 15% ταχύτερη ταχύτητα από έναν 5070ti, να σπάει τα 4k/240hz όταν ο 5070ti σπάνια συνιστάται για 4k;

Πώς είναι υπερβολικό ένα 5080 για 4k;

it’s less about raw % uplift vs the 5070 Ti and more about where the 5080 sits today. Current AAA titles at native 4K usually aren’t saturating a 5080 unless you max RT or push crazy settings. In raster, even the 5070 Ti can be playable at 4K60, so saying the 5080 overkills 4K is shorthand for: you’ll hit high frame rates 120–144Hz+ with headroom to spare. The gap widens if you add path tracing or DLSS Quality vs the 5070 Ti.
So yeah, 15% over a 5070 Ti doesn’t sound like much, but the 5080’s absolute performance tier is what makes it feel like overkill for most 4K use cases today, until heavier next-gen games arrive.

Thank you all for your helpful replies, I think I will hold out and wait for the 5080 Super - although I know the wait will be agonising, I'll feel better about it in the long run!
