Hello,

I'm looking to backup two computers to a NAS and have it serve as a multimedia sharepoint for myself. Is there a benefit to building something that runs FreeNAS/TrueNAS vs using something like a Synology or Ugreen? I'm trying to keep the price down to ~500-650 USD. It seems rather difficult to hit the pricepoint of the prebuilt versions while keeping the formfactor down. I'm not interested in having an old tower hanging out as space is at a premium where I live.

Yeah synology is a poor buy as qnap, asus, ugreen,.. have long since eclipsed them in the consumer space.

You can just use a sff pc and slot it in somewhere. Really does depend on the amount of disks needed in there.

Also raid is NOT a backup just to make sure that is known. If the data is important make sure you have at least 3 copies of it, 2 in different locations and preferably one is offsite

But an itx nas is also easy enough to do. Plenty small many drive bay cases and juat chuck in a n100 cpu itx board and done. Would be around 400 all in usually

Thanks for the info, I plan on having Amazon Glacier for the offsite backup since the cost seems low. I threw this together in PCpartpicker, I think this should suffice?

I think Intel is preferred to low cost NAS due to better hardware transcoding?

this is what I buildt my first one in, it holds 6 HDDS and a mini ITX board.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...
