Hi, I recently got myself a gaming laptop (please don't grill me) for both gaming and University study, it was quite the investment and we all know how "amazing" most laptop hinges are. When I'm not at University I have my laptop on a laptop stand with the lid opened at 90 - 110 degrees for easy access as I assumed that would put less stress on the hinges, and is usually left open for a couple of days before I close it up and bring it with me. Since this laptop was quite expensive, I want it to last as long as possible, so I'm wondering, when I'm not going out and about, would it better: to leave my laptop lid opened all day or should I leave it closed when I'm not using it, at all? I'm specifically talking about the hinges not breaking on the lid, as the hinges on the lid are glued on, and I would like some reasoning please. My laptop is a ASUS TUF A16 (2024) and many reviewers that I read mentioned that the laptop hinges feel "good" but no one that I have read have mentioned or question the hinge longevity. Yes I'm that paranoid as every laptop I've had, had its hinges break and not covered under warranty! Some advice regarding hinge longevity would be appreciated too. Please and thank you.

Doesn’t matter, you’re indeed being too paranoid. Hinge longevity is something you check when purchasing a laptop and not after.

You want the type of hinges that span the whole base of the laptop, and not two on each side measuring like 1cm and being made in cheap plastic. Had my Razer Blade for 6 years and the hinges are awesome.

Main machine:  Ryzen 9 9950x3D - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070ti OC 16GB  - Gigabyte X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 - 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 - Seasonic FOCUS GX-1000 ATX3.1 - Lancool 207 digital - Artic liquid freezer III Pro - 2 x 27" AOC Q27G4X - WD SN850X 2TB - 2 x WD SN770 2TB

Remote client:  Razer Blade 15 (2020) base - i7 10750H - GeForce RTX 2060 - 16GB DDR4 3000MHz (only used for decoding streams from main machine)
