Gaming on Linux.. with mod managers, how ?

Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

I haven't tried it as I usually install mods manually but apparently Vortex works?

yes, it's using wine but I don't see why that should be problem? Also the guide is updated from this July of 2025 so...

Also...

does this work?

So I've a dual Win10/Linux Mint boot (using GRUB), I don't want Win11 and seriously consider fully switching to Linux

I'm a gamer with a few games I play a lot, namely TW Warhammmer 3, CP2077, KCD2, BG3

And I use mods for all those

I can get my games to work on Steam under Linux using Proton, but I don't know how to cope with mod managers like Vortex (from Nexumods), or the one I use for TW Warhammer 3, aptly called "WH3 Mod Manager" 😛

Googling gave me rather old answers and it looked complicated (using Wine and tinkering with stuff) and not always working

Could ask some AI but prefer discussing with people 🙂

From my experience for mod managers to work effectively so it can find the relevant game files etc, usually best to run/install them from the same Wine/Proton prefix (file path location) the game was installed to.

The use of winetricks/protontricks may make this easier to manage.

Open winetricks/protontricks > Select game from list > Install an Application > Cancel > Run Executable > Navigate to downloaded .exe and Ok. The mod manager will now run/install to the wine/proton prefix for your choose game.

Thanks guys, seems easily doable but still not intuitive to me, gotta train out of my Windows habits (dating back from Windows itself, 3.0, even used DOS for years, yay!)
