Hello! I have been saving for a few years now and have saved up enough to get a ~$100-130 used card. I have 2 Dell T3500's each with a 6-pin power. Im wondering, how safe would it be to use a 2 6-pin to 1 8-pin adapter and then use the psu from each system to power a gpu? I have seen similar posts about using 2 PSU's, but I just really want to be sure my house won't burn down. If not, I might just go for a 1650 super or something so I can avoid the risk. Thank you!

buy a motherboard/cpu combo

something used even with integrated graphics would probably exceed the speed of that machine.

I guess I can look. In my head, why buy the other parts like motherboards when I already have working ones? I need good video encoding quite a lot, so I was thinking just putting a encoding capable gpu in there would be enough. If I were to get a new motherboard/cpu, I would also have to get a new PSU, as all 3 of mine are proprietary. Do you recomend going Intel or AMD for this? I see quite a lot of older intel CPU's go for quite cheap ($5-30).

You don't upgrade it. You start from scratch.

Sounds expensive. If I already have working base parts, I would think it would be better just max out the socket and PSU, and when the time comes, I just sell it to fund a better build.

A. you're wasting money that should go to your next machine on this one

B. that machine isn't worth any money as far as selling it. unless the area you are in is so remote that there aren't any other computers.

The x5675 you intend to use is about half the speed of a ryzen 5 1600 which is a 30$ processor now. So i'm not sure why you are purposely trying to use a slower machine than what most people might throw away these days.

I was leaning toward upgrading my existing setup because I already have the motherboard and PSU, but if the X5675 is half the speed of a Ryzen 5 1600, I'll look into a AMD board. I would have to get a new PSU though. Looking on eBay, ryzen 5 1600 mobo combos are like ~$150, so it will take a month or 2 to get that extra $20. If it really isn't worth anything, I might just keep it around as a server or something, or sell it for $20 so I can get the combo.

I'm just trying to use what I have. Maybe its just me, but I can't imagine just tossing my best computer away.

well it becomes easier to imagine when you witness a task your computer struggled with finish instantly on a cheapo budget computer. that usually does it.

When I retired my dual x5679 setup , it was because cyberpunk 2077 took maybe 20-25 seconds to load which seemed fair , but the new machine basically didn't have to wait to load... it just started the game instantly

That does sound nice. I will be looking into mobo combos. Upgrading my mobo means I need a new PSU. How safe are used PSU's?

As with any product just buy from reputable sellers that have a large amount of good feedback. typically the bigger the seller , the less they care about returns or exchanges if something goes wrong.

power supplies are pretty simplistic , they usually can outlast the machine they are in and used ones usually are fine.

that being said you can use something simple like passmarks website to get a rough idea for cpu speeds in generalized loads. then search for either mobo/cpu combos with those cpus and or..... you probably could buy an entire machine used for cheap which will already have a psu in it and probably drives etc....

Thank you! I'll look out on FBM or eBay! I'll also be checking some local thrift stores.
