I read about against using 2x8gb DDR5, but is it the case for both Intel and AMD? Is 2x16gb DDR5 the minimum to use?

There is nothing wrong with using 2x8gb DDR5.

AMD / AM5 does not like 4 sticks of RAM at all so if you want to upgrade from 16gb to 32gb its recommended to buy another 2x16gb kit.. Leaving you with 2x8gb you are not using.

Its 2025.  Get 32GB if you can.

32GB+ is well worth it if you're not on an extreme budget.

2x8 isn't something I'd be buying for a new gaming PC.

You can get away with it, but needs more micro-management (e.g. closing down browser tabs) and just isn't worth it in the longer-term. Those sticks will also be harder to sell or re-use.

I have to micromanage with 32GB even lol.

Eh, there kinda is. The 2x8GB kits are of a different organization to the 2x16GB kits (1Rx16 vs. 1Rx8, though admittedly there are a few weirdo 1Rx8 2x8GB kits out there that use partially disabled memory), and that different organization leads to worse performance per stick. It ends up where a 6000 CL30 2x8GB kit performs about the same as a JEDEC 4800 2x16GB kit.

That would be one thing, but the issue is their price. They don't cost anywhere near enough less when compared to a 2x16GB kit to justify their lower performance and half the capacity. It's usually just an extra $20 to get the 2x16GB version, and that's well worth it.

IMO if you can't afford a 2x16GB of DDR5, you can't afford DDR5.

Yes, it's the bare minimum worth using.

It's the fact, that you get new platform kind of PC, so usually powerful.

And then you give it 16GB of RAM

  • You will still play thousands of games including this one on 16GB, but it's the matter of having modern system and "bottlenecking" with RAM choice for games that might start to take hit at 16GB of RAM

there are also 48GB (2x24) and 94GB (2x48) kits for DDR5.

😉

I personally am eyeing the 48GB as a nice potential "sweet spot" of $/capacity.

At Newegg they start at ~$100 on up depending on speed.

for example; 48 GB 6800MHZ is around $130 across brands.

of course there are the usual variations depending on particulars, but not much more than $ 32GB kits.
