Can i upgrade my cpu

My pc will have the following motherboard - MB AMD A55 SFM2 MATX/GA-F2A55M-S1 GIGA-BYTE

It supports only A-series and Athlon series cpus from AMD right? Does that mean that i can choose any cpu from those series ? The cpu will be athlon x4 740. I would like to upgrade that. And what are the best cpus from A-series and athlon series?

go for fm2+ boards they will let you upgrade in future, in performance/ $ go for the  athlon x4 760k, if you want a next a new gen cpu go for the A10 7850k

Athlon is not A-series afaik. The A-series are APUs, the athlon series are a really old line of processing units. I haven't kept up with the CPU market for a while now, but as far as I can gather the Athlon II is a resurrection of the old line of Athlon branding, and it's the lower spectrum of their products.

Yes, you seemed to use Athlon and A-series interchangably.

Any idea what revision your motherboard is, it says either "REV: 1.0"  or "REV: 3.0" all the way in the corner where the onboard audio is. if it is rev. 1 here's the CPU support list:

in both cases the X4 740 is supported, but be aware the X4 chips have no onboard graphics, so you'll need dedicated graphics for it to work.

for gaming get a athlon 740 and a r9 270 and you are good to go

an fm2 upgrade wont be doing much for you.

upgrade to a new socket  or let it be and save your money.
