Went to a computer repair shop because my computer wasn't booting, no POST, no usb power.

They said they "tried reviving the motherboard" and said it booted for a sometime but the problem came back and it would need replacement, i said I'll think about it.

I came home and plugged it in to see if it would boot maybe even for a sec and i saw sparks and burning smell, I think that is a capacitor burnt?

I'm not sure if they are trying to mask their own mistake, my motherboard never sparked before, should I go to a different repair shop, I want to ask u all if I should bother for trying to repair it.

This built is quite old intel i7 6th gen, z170 k motherboard and I know it's easier to replace motherboard but I cannot find an overclockable one, I can only find asrock q270 btc which is an atx, all other I can find are matx from not so reliable brands.

Should one spend resources repairing this, is it even repairable.

The main problem with these old boards/systems is that some cheapo H610 board plus 12100F/13100F/14100F can beat even the fastest available CPU (overclocked or not) and often has similar connectivity (e.g. 4x SATA, 1-2 M.2 slot, a few USB3), so it just isn't worth spending a lot on keeping them going.

Ebay? Its full of em. Dont get a z series as those cost more than a new board and by then you might as well just upgrade the cpu and board.

It may be repairable but will it be reliable ? Not sure. When a capacitor pops, there may be some damage to other components but other capacitors may pop soon too.

Like other posters said, you should consider upgrading your motherboard + CPU.

Good luck !
